What a classic batch! Stepping Stone, Take Me Out, The Spell, Viva La Vida!

Stepping Stone is the unsung hero of Rockferry. What a beautiful, underrated song.

I always misread Alphabeat as @Alphableat now. Ha! My favourite of theirs is Boyfriend, I think.

Viva La Vida may very well be the last true Coldplay classic? I know that they continued to sell by the bucketload after this, but I don’t think they went on to release another song that was a) huge, b) just as timeless and c) brilliant. It all went downhill after this era.

I know that this forum isn’t exactly big on men in music, but both Take Me Out and Viva La Vida probably deserved a bit more than this. Franz Ferdinand even came close to releasing an album with Xenomania!

I thought about it but we'll see which of their albums make an album appearance instead of on the songs countdown.

Viva la vida? Alizee called, said she wants her Johnny Marr back or something.

Haha, yes! In a perfect world, that song would have a pretty good showing here as well. I doubt it, though!

I’ll always remember how Viva La Vida was used as the election victory song for Dutch PM Mark Rutte’s party about 12 years ago. When the final results were out there and it was pretty clear that he would become the new PM, he entered the stage to the lyric “Never an honest word, and that was when I ruled the world”. Make of that what you will!

STEPPING STONE | DUFFY

I adore Stepping Stone. I remember hearing it for the first time on my brother's iPod. I played it so many times that it became his most played song. He couldn't knock it from the top spot, it stayed there for years.

Duffy did that with this masterpiece.

Echoing the Viva la Vida love, though like most of their songs I think it's better when other people are covering it:

And likewise:

Chris Martin's a brilliant songwriter, but I don't like his voice, and the band's production tends to be on the bland side.

WHEN I GROW UP | THE PUSSYCAT DOLLS

Voted By: @saviodxl

saviodxl commentary:
One of the most important lessons delivered in pop song form: "be careful what you wish for, 'cause you just might get it". Also one of the best dance breaks serving as a middle 8 in the video version. Now where's the freaking video version on Spotify please?

Waiting is classic Xenomania quirkiness. Like I said in the Girls Aloud rate, all of the “W” tracks on Chemistry are career highlights.

Unfortunately The Killers didn’t make my list. Lots of great songs (including the one on this page), but not necessarily one that stands out as THE song. Overall they were very consistent throughout the 00s.

This will probably always be the most iconic Pussycat Dolls moment (maybe for the wrong reasons, but still):

What the hell was that?

CHERRY LIPS (GO BABY GO) | GARBAGE

Voted By: @sfmartin

sfmartin commentary:
What a glorious pop song. Garbage showing all lessers how to craft a perfect pop song. This should have been number one for weeks and weeks. It is joyous but with lyrics with the tongue firmly planted in cheek enough not to seem trite. The perfect blend of bouncy guitars, hand claps, Shirley’s sickly sweet vocals. A total joy.

CRAZY (JAMES MICHAEL MIX) | ALANIS MORISSETTE

DJHazey Commentary:
Yeah I know, a cover is my favorite Alanis song? Get out! Right? Seal’s original is amazing as ever, nothing against it, but having Alanis’s voice doing it makes it even better. This song is just magical to me.
