THE BOY DOES NOTHING | ALESHA DIXON

Voted By: @Island

Not surprised I'm the only voter for Wake Up but it's always been one of my favorite Hilary songs. It was all over Disney Channel when it came out and I remember seeing the music video play quite often. I also remember thinking that her in the black wig was Miranda from Lizzie ddd. I know I didn't really "get" the lyrics as a kid, and just though it'd be cool to go to all the places she listed. Now I find it to be a pretty good breakdown of celebrity lifestyle and the production is just perfect in it's 80s synthy pop rock glory. Also the music video is one of my favorites of hers. I especially love the London and Paris looks.
And I will forever be disappointed Most Wanted wasn't a full album as much as I like the remixes on there. This, Beat Of My Heart and Break My Heart are three of her best songs, and Supergirl is good too. The idea of an entire album in that vein makes me drool. I'd kill to hear any unreleased songs from it.
Changed music forever!!!!!
Hilary pioneered the movement to bring back the 80s!!!

ALSO I had no idea SHINee were active as early as 2008 ddddd

Some personal heavy hitters today. When You're Gone is that typical mid-00s big pop rock girl ballad smash (a very particular box to put it in but I didn't want to name the other two songs it reminds me of yet ddd) and Waking Up In Vegas was in my Katy Top 3 back when I was a stan (R.I.P. 2008 - early 2014). I took The Alesha Show era for granted in 2008 but now I look back on it with such nostalgia... we were so lucky it happened!

WHY NOT | HILARY DUFF

As I have detailed several times on PJ, Radio Disney was huge part of my pop experience in the early 00s. This was even more the case when I was going through some pretty rough times & the unbridled enthusiasm of the channel brought me some needed joy.

'Why Not' might be my personal pinnace of the 'Radio Disney Experience'. Between the Lizzie movie connection, the quirkily perfect pop/rock production, & Hilary's enthusiastic bubblegum vocal... it just all lands for me. I never get tired of it (in all its in various forms! The McMix is one I go to often.)

Ultimately, the thing that puts the song over the top (and made for its easy inclusion here) is simply one of my favorite middle 8'/breakdowns of all time. The absurdly brilliant (brilliantly absurd?) line of:

'You'll never get to heaven or even to L.A.
If you don't believe there's a way"

...followed by the acousti-gltichy 4 bar call-to-action by Ms. Duff:

"Why not (Why not) take a star from the sky?
Why not (Why not) spread your wings and fly?"

and then exuberant explosion of:

"Oh, it might take a little, and it might take a lot
But why not?
Why not?
OW!"

...before launching back into the chorus.

Just one of my favorite 20 second sections in any pop song, ever.

VOICES | SAOSIN

Voted By: @livefrommelbs (get well soon!)
Year: 2006
Country of Origin: USA

livefrommelbs commentary:
Yah... definitely gonna be the only one giving points to this bad boy, haha. Saosin's self-titled album from 2006 is one of my favourite rock albums of all time - and the 00s was the decade I stanned rock the hardest, so its place here is well and truly warranted. One of those songs that I fell in love with the minute the wave of guitars and drums comes crashing in, it's dressed up as a post-hardcore heavy hitter. But those of us who don't turn it off are blessed some truly special singing from former frontman Cove Reber (SUCH a powerful voice), and an anthemic chorus with a message. Nigh-on untouchable in the 00s emo/rock pantheon, to these ears.

Happy to see Saosin here, this song and its parent album defined my teenage years! Most rock bands could only dream of writing hooks as good.

(Also, sending lots of love, @Phonetics Girl. Keeping everything crossed for you!)
Thank you so much 4 this! Apparently, our doggo is a fighter. I can't believe it but he made it through surgery. They fixed his urinary tract and he's back home today. There is hope that he'll recover successfully and I'm struggling to process the relief right now fff!

What's a better way to celebrate than with our first multiple-voter entry? Coming up in a minute...
