The R.E.M. song is beautiful
Around The Sun became one of the more maligned albums in R.E.M.s discog, by both critics & the band. That's a shame, really. It's actually a pretty amazing album that really feels organically like a particular place & time to me in zeitgeist of the world...maybe more so than any album by the band. That's saying something.
From the aftermath of 9/11, to the reelection of Bush, to an aging band trying to figure out where they even fit into changing landscape of everything going in both the real world + the music industry .... the undercurrent of the album was more subversive than many other albums by band (and other efforts by their contemporaries). Maybe it was too subversive in some ways, so it came of slight? I don't know, but I love the album & 'Aftermath' has become a top 5 song by the band over the years, which is saying something.
Some other highlights from the album (a couple that I probably liked more in my earlier fandom of the album before Aftermath became 'the one'.)
