Happy to see another Royksopp track, as they are also one of my favourite artists. 'The Girl And The Robot' is in my Top 10 tracks of theirs. Thank you for choosing it @sfmartin. Dd it's a bit of an oddity in my list, but yeah I had a soft spot for all that 00s post-grunge stuff back then. Like most of the acts in that genre, Seether had a couple excellent early albums then went through the motions for the rest of their career. This song is from the last album of theirs I truly loved front to back, and has become my favorite over the years.
My love for it is pretty simple: its campfire acoustic vibe just does it for me, and Shaun Morgan's voice perfectly fits it. He's an underrated vocalist, one that I always wished would've lent his voice over heavier stuff due to its grittiness and deepness. It's a classic and straightforward soft-to-loud semi-ballad, backed by additional piano touches and some weird instruments I can't name in the background. Its parent album came out around Halloween and I remember spinning this during every single following one as, somehow, there's a spooky instrument in the verses that gives me Halloween vibes! It's been a staple for the last 15 years and, even though I've moved from that kind of music since, I don't see that ever changing.

I stanned alternative/emo music just as much as I stanned pop between 2005-2009 (if not more, it could be argued). Jimmy Eat World were up there with my favourite bands in this formative period of my life - and the kinda-hopeful, kinda-sad 'Work' was always the pinnacle of emo anthems for me. More gentle than a lot of the songs I listened to at the time, this is one of the songs that immediately hits me in the feels and takes me back to 2005. Reminds me of being young, optimistic about life and the world ahead, and bursting at the seams with emotions I wasn't quite sure how to process or handle just yet. The power of music, huh?

So many Ladytron tracks I was debating for this list. I had to go with them at their most energetic and commercial. Four and half minutes of yet another (so many on my list) thundering, stomping chorus propelled by epic electronica. Ladytron crushing my fragile skull with this behemoth and I am loving every second, “please destroy me this way”.

This is one of the defining songs of young adulthood for me, and having this R&B techno ballad appear in my life at one of the most turbulent times in my life honestly saved me. There are so many things I could go in depth on with this song like Nakata’s brilliant songwriting and production, but the thing that brings me back again and again is the girls exhaling at the very end of the song. It’s just such an interesting touch, and makes me play it over and over and over just to hear it.

If debut single 'Running Back' was the sit-up-and-take-notice moment for Jessica's career, the blistering 'Burn' was proof that she was, fittingly, on fire for her first era.
