TRAIN | GOLDFRAPP

Voted By: @soratami (16) @sfmartin (9)
Year: 2003
Country of Origin: England
Appearance: 5th

sfmartin commentary:
It is so difficult to pick a Goldfrapp song for my list since they did so many wonderful things in the 00s. Of their bops, it is hard choosing between this, Strict Machine, Ooh La La or Ride A White Horse. All are worthy. It has to be Train because out of that list it was the first time we heard their signature mix of stomping glam disc, sultry, sexy vocals and pounding electronica. It was very unique at the time and inspired so many acts trying their hand at the same kind of thing; to varying degrees of success (I mostly lapped them all up). It bought a wave of electro-pop imitations in its wake, which I am forever grateful for. We would have no Some Girls if it weren’t for this! Still sounds as good today. The lyrics are of course mad but only adds to the queer euphoria of the song. Courageous, powerful, bold and sexy.

LEFT OUTSIDE ALONE | ANASTACIA

Voted By: @DJHazey (17) @livefrommelbs (9)
Year: 2004
Country of Origin: USA
Appearance: 5th

DJHazey Commentary:
I bet @Sprockrooster is going to be emotional when he sees this. I’m sure he got tagged in the same post by our host anyway, because this needs to be on his list as well! I remember years ago, I was silly to dismiss this song when someone posted the video and told me to give it a shot. Years after that, I heard it in the Rock Chicks rate Sprocky hosted and everything changed. Anastacia’s voice was not an instant thing for me because her tone of voice was something new for my ears. It’s very distinct and not going to be for everyone, I’m sure all of us can admire this quality for what it is; she’s truly unique. That’s a good thing. Once I experienced her discography rate, I discovered Anastacia might be the best power ballad artist I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. Her catalogue is littered with great ones and although this is much more of a bop than most of the others I’d list by her, I’d still say it has one of those factors going for it in spades. Power. If you get nothing else form her music, at least get that she pours every ounce of her being into her music. The emotion is raw, it’s courageous, and it’s defiant. I’ve come to find out it’s how she lived her life, so that only makes sense. The number of challenges this woman has faced in her life is mind boggling, yet she only ever persevered. “Left Outside Alone” seems like a small piece of that when you consider her multiple battles with cancer, since we seem to be touching upon relationship troubles here. However, it doesn’t diminish the impact…oh not one bit. The sharpness of Anastacia’s vocal is on full display as she pounces onto the first line: “Left broken, empty and in despair. Wanna breathe, can’t find air.” Not only does that just roll off the tongue, but it has bite. She isn’t mincing words here. She has a message to send to who wronged her and the person isn’t leaving the room until the message in clear; tattooed into their skull. The fire, the passion, it never ever lets up. Pretty soon you’re delirious with emotions of your own as you sing along. After several of these experiences for myself it became pretty easy to understand – this has become a song that will be part of my existence forever and easily considered an all-timer.

livefrommelbs commentary:
This would have to be up there in my most-played songs of all time. I was absolutely BESOTTED with it when it dreamt. There's something so bewitching about the way the song lures you in with the falsetto intro, then the guitars kick in during the verse, before the first chorus explodes to life. It's pop-rock at its most enchanting. By the time you reach the 'heavenly father' middle 8 and Anastacia lets fly on the ad libs, it's all over. What a song.

Well, my comments mention @Sprockrooster might have also voted for it, but I knew that wasn't the case because he mentioned that prior in the thread (I think). So, I was curious as to who might be popping up here instead. I was thinking maybe someone like @Robsolete, I could of sworn this near the top of their list as well. Didn't expect @livefrommelbs necessarily but it's wonderful to find out we both have this in our Top 12 songs of the decade.

It would have 100% been in my top 10 if I'd managed to get my votes in.

I voted for Time but have voted for Left Outside Alone for tactic reasons before in the ultimate countdown cause I expected the song to perform better obviously than Time. But now I feel like quantity is also something as she is more represented with more songs and to be fair Time is my favourite. I am very glad to see it ranked so high now and one could imagine the length it would have gone if I gave it my 20 points (instead of Time). Please do not tell me @Phonetics Girl

POKER FACE | LADY GAGA

Voted By: @livefrommelbs (17) @4Roses (6) @GimmeWork (3)
Year: 2008
Country of Origin: USA
Appearance: 5th

livefrommelbs commentary:
I don't doubt that Bad Romance will be the highest Gagaloo bop on this poll, but Poker Face will always the one for me. It took everything that was so fantastic about 'Just Dance' as a debut and dialled up to 11 - and was arguably the first real instance we all get of the iconoclastic Gaga we'd come to know and adore. A relentless bop, filled with instantly unforgettable hooks, that had us ALL reporting to the dancefloor over the 2008/2009 period (to say nothing for all the years after that).

4Roses Commentary:
A song so GOOD it had me breaking a heel to ring Smash Hits for a radio request.

BAD TIMES | ANNIE

Voted By: @DJHazey (19) @Runawaywithme (8)
Year: 2009
Country of Origin: Norway
Appearance: 2nd

DJHazey Commentary:
The rank for this song just keeps going up over time. In the last ‘Ultimate Popjustice’ it was ranked like 11th for my all-time favorite songs. It just doesn’t age one bit. Part of that is because Annie’s otherworldly "ice queen" vocal is timeless, the other part is how undeniably catchy the melody is; which is catapulted by notes that seemingly only she can hit. The entire song is like this big wave of effortless and seamless transitions; it’s always such a thrill to ride that wave and get lost in it. For a person who suffers from depression, having a song literally present ‘bad times never sounding so good’, -- well, that’s a tiny dose of therapy right there.

Runawaywithme Commentary:
This song is just absolutely beautiful and has got me through some awful times. The perfect song for a wistful crisp autumn walk too, or to stare out the rainy window of a bus too.

Ah, this lasted so much longer than I thought, amazed it had two other voters, I'd guessed possibly @Lost In Japan as I think we both 11'd Here and Now in the Steps rate, but it's brilliant that @VivaForever joined us!

If only the alien spaceship could transport me back to 2001, a time full of new experiences and excitement...

STATE OF MIND | HOLLY VALANCE

Voted By: @sfmartin (11) @SophiaSophia (8) @unnameable (5) @berserkboi (3)
Year: 2003
Country of Origin: Australia
Appearance: 2nd

sfmartin commentary:
Well this was not supposed to happen. Many people would have wrote Holly off after Kiss Kiss (despite her other hit singles). No one expected her to release such a unique, inventive electro banger leaving most other pop girls in the dust. Definitely inspired by my number one choice, the 80s industrial synths laced throughout the song and a dramatic chorus. Shame it killed her career dead. In a just world, it would have been a multimillion number 1 smash.
