WHO'S TO SAY | VANESSA CARLTON

Voted By: @DJHazey (20) @pop3blow2 (20) @beyoncésweave (11)
Year: 2004
Country of Origin: USA
Appearance: 2nd

DJHazey Commentary:
In the past…ten years I’d say, Vanessa has grown into one of my all-time favorite artists. The kind where everything they do just clicks immediately and there’s hardly an explanation. Some musicians just have that spell over us, when seemingly everything they do sounds catchy almost instantly. Vanessa’s voice just resonates with me in this manner; to me it’s flawless. Most of my music library consists of songs that rely far more on electronic-dance production and I usually don’t have time for ballads the same way I do for bops. This characteristic is especially true when it comes to this decade, a decade that influenced my passion for dance music more than any other. In a lot of ways Vanessa is a unicorn among my music tastes. For this song in particular, Vanessa nails every aspect that makes her who she is. Every word is expertly crafted to tell a story of courage, defiance, and reflection. A story where no word is wasted and every feeling is touched upon with care. The narrative is given extra life with a chorus that reaches for the heights of power-pop glory, a pinnacle few songs could ever wish to achieve. The moment when things slow down and Vanessa recalls “you and I, packin’ up my room” is my favorite one as it captures the cinematic so brilliantly. It’s a strong example of how Vanessa makes it feel like you’re experiencing the scene with her. This story plays out like a couple challenged for being who they are and who they want to be; mainly be together. That simple aspect of their lives seems to be put on trial for whatever reason, whether it’s their parents “Mother, don’t…” or any other ‘enemy of love’ that seeks to break your bond. I love songs that make it seem ‘do or die’ or that everything is on the line. The only thing you can rely on is the hand you’re squeezing and the promises you’ve made to each other. Few storylines speak to me the same way this does, so I treat Who’s to Say as the bible on the subject. Whether I end up finding this kind of love for myself or not doesn’t really matter, but I do know I’d be willing to put a sense of loyalty to the test, that I know is within me. I know because I can feel it when I listen to songs like this and that helps me achieve some peace. “They don’t know who we are”. They don’t, nobody truly does, you only know what you have inside you, what you can bring to the table, what you can offer. That’s what matters, outside voices and influences don’t mean shit. I wish I could express my love for this to Vanessa herself and try to tell her what it means to me. I’d likely fail trying to do that, but I’d still be able to look her in the eye and at least say she achieved the “everything song” for at least two fans (because I know it has similar impact on @pop3blow2)

Dear @Verandi, what else can I say but "taste!!!" We did obvs match on the Avril pick, Beauty On The Fire is one of my fave discoveries, so thanks for that & also for highlighting underrated gems such as Explode, Drumming Song and Waiting! Beware of the Dog and Maneater deserved better, teebs! G*d, 2006 really snapped for Nelly and Jamelia!

I wanna thank all my fans and also remind them to stream these 20 songs once, stream them twice buy them on iTunes, gift them to a friend etc.

Obsessed with this rate teebs.

Oh hi @pop3blow2, wonderfully eclectic as ever! It can get lonely out here for the ballad stans, so it's lovely to see a downtempo-heavy ballot, especially with my favs Leona and Kelly featured. Kabul Shit really is peak Lily, isn't it? Try and Turn Off The Light are dead cert for my Nelly top 10 with the former being an 11 among 11s, so yeah, taste all around!!

Genuinely shocked neither @soratami and @DJHazey are voters for this. It already got a higher placement than I anticipated, but with them - it could have gone Top 15of the Decade? Work!

I love Untouched like any other Veronicas stan, but their discography is sooo deep and full of gems, I have had like 25 different "this is my favorite Veronicas song" moments with them I ended up without one for this list.

SEXY! NO NO NO... | GIRLS ALOUD

Voted By: @BubblegumBoy (19) @Untouchable Ace (17) @sfmartin (15) @Iggypig (3)
Year: 2007
Country of Origin: England

sfmartin commentary:
This isn’t my 11 in the Girls Aloud rate but I want to give this the best chance it has in this rate. 15 years on it’s lost none of its potency. That immaculate eerie vocodered introduction rocketing into a thunderous chorus that rips every follicle off your head. I would have love an extended version much like they did on the Tangled Up tour. It is always over too soon. I say the test of a great pop song is if the instrumental is just as enjoyable as the actual song and thanks to Xenomania Girls Aloud never fail to let me down on this front. It just never stops for breath. It is exhausting in the best way.

I actually like this one a lot more now than I did at the time. It probably suffered quite a bit from the fact that the Aloud votes were split between a whole bunch of songs. I can’t imagine the remaining song(s) lasting much longer for that very reason, but I hope they can hang on in there for a little bit longer!

The chokehold this song had on me from the moment it was released and has done ever since. What a moment.

I literally can't remember what I have left in from my ballot but if this is my last song, what a way to go!

UNTOUCHABLE | GIRLS ALOUD

Voted By: @Untouchable Ace (20) @DJHazey (18) @marie_05 (12) @Ezz (4)
Year: 2008
Country of Origin: England
Appearance: 11th

DJHazey Commentary:
Ever since I first started listening to this band, there hasn’t been a moment when this wasn’t my favorite song of theirs. It’d be hard to say it’s not my favorite song by a girl group, period. I might go further and say favorite ballad/power ballad/6+ minute song/etc. – From Nicola’s transcendent vocal to the middle eight that I wear on my profile page with pride, it all comes together to build that perfect masterpiece. The towering chorus, literally 40 stories tall, ascends to heights that no one could ever dream of reaching. I could sit here and spew descriptors all day, but somehow none of them would be able to do the song justice. So, I’ll stop and pray someone else picked it as their #1 Girls Aloud moment too cuz Lorde knows they have too many to choose from.
