Some Girls is an undeniable pop song. I didn't vote for it, so I suppose I did deny it, but it's a heavyweight of the genre and of the era. Rachel Stevens earned her spot among the pantheon of culture defining Rachels in the mid-2000s (Hunter, Greene, McAdams, Bilson) before the name nosedived with Platten, and for that we thank her and all the other important Rachels (Maddow, Weisz, the one I'm friends with now and the two I went to primary school with but not the one I went to secondary school with) for their contributions to our society. She did well to climb out of the wreckage of S Club 7 and, in my opinion, is the one bringing all the prestige into their reunions.

Slightly disappointed that this missed the top 10! Come and Get It was one of THE albums of the 00s and a bona fide Popjustice classic. It’s synonymous with this forum for me.
I read this with Long Hot Summer playing in the background and late 2005 really was an exceptional time for pop albums.
(Or maybe they were just all more special to me because I got my first ipod so didn't have to pick between albums anymore?? But nah, Confessions, Chemistry, Come And Get It, PCD, Breakaway, Supernature, it does all feel very peak Popjustice)

This rate taught me I love the vibe and sound of this so much that in my top 20 I have the original and the homage.

You forgot Griffiths.

DIRRTY | CHRISTINA AGUILERA FEAT. REDMAN

saviodxl commentary:
A come of age song that really shocked me back in the day when Xtina went from innocent pop girl to sexual beast. We've seen bubblegum pop artists going sexual along the decade and I'm glad she did this transition too. Back then I barely knew I needed this 'sluty in the club' anthem in my life.

sfmartin commentary:
Did this win the Christina rate? I am still sour we haven’t found out. Iconic song, iconic video, iconic vocals, iconic outfits. An explosion of raw energy and attitude. It blew the mother-fucking roof off my world when she released it. There is something about it that possesses your soul when it comes on in the club. One of the best female pop singles of all time. No one could have expected this at the time from Christina but she sells it to the moon and back.

ACE REJECT | SUGABABES

Voted By:

londonrain commentary:
My test of whether a potential boyfriend is really interested in keeping up with my music geekery is how they react to me explaining how utterly bonkers the structure of Ace Reject is. It really shouldn't work - the thing that you think is the chorus isn't actually the chorus, and you only realise over two minutes into the song that the actual chorus is something that was teased via a two-line instrumental before the second verse. Much like Girls Aloud's Biology, this is very much a case of Xenomania taking a bunch of disparate melodies and tempos and somehow jamming them together to make a surprisingly cohesive song. Clever pop songwriting at its finest.

DJHazey Commentary:
In contrast to Girls Aloud where I could list a handful of songs that are in another class, with Sugababes it's always been Ace Reject from the first time @beyoncesweave played for me it on plug.dj, several years ago. Everytime I've played it since, it would climb one tier after another until I started seriously considering if it's my favorite song across the two bands, period. The decriptor "atmospheric" or "ethereal" was either invented or re-invented by this tune, whichever way you want to view it. It's still so amazing how the "payoff" is so far into the song, yet it never feels like it's taking too long to get there. In fact, by the time you get there, you almost want to start over just so you can enjoy this incredible buildup one more time. That's what repeat button is for and Lorde knows I've used it for Ace Reject maybe more than any other song on my list.

It would be hard not to say Ace Reject is actually my #2 song, but the group of songs under "Who's to Say" is very bunched up together, it's truly like 'Sophie's Choice' to put one above the other. I love that's their this big list of us all voting an album track so high up on the list.

Is it the highest album track here? It's gotta be, right?

Kinda of funny that the Sugababes rate was necroed recently and some people were actually trying to have an opinion that Ace Reject winning was some kind of flawed/weird result. Like, what? I hope they see this because it might end up being the highest ranked song for the band.
