I absolutely love Ace Reject but it's one of those songs where on some days I'm not sure if it's actually one of my favourites of theirs or that I'm just brainwashed by this forum. Like there's those songs that get bigger than the sum of their parts, often because they just are the moment/break the charts, but there's absolutely a similar effect for songs that receive endless praise on here, and this is definitely one of those.

I've mentioned a few times on the forum how my love of R&B comes from my thing for syncopation, where longer and shorter beats are used in a bar, and Say It Right uses syncopation very well - listen to the way every alternate beat is longer than the others (the second beat of every four-beat bar is the shortest, coming in later than expected and ending earlier than expected, giving the third beat extra time to breathe before the fourth beat actually arrives on time). It's a shame Nelly decided she didn't really want to continue in this vein because this whole era was gold and totally unexpected from the woman who gave us Powerless and I'm Like A Bird.

Promiscuous and Maneater may be somewhat more bombastic and immediate, but Say It Right is like the little engine that could.
