Victoria Beckham

I stand by my opinion that Schizophonic, Northern Star and Free Me are the solo spice holy trinity.

All seemed authentic to each girl with strong singles and album tracks.

Hot was watered down Janet Jackson and VB was watered down J Lo. Both have some great tracks but neither deserve the same praise as the other three.

I gave Victoria Beckham a spin after quite a long time to mark the 20th anniversary. It was good to listen to it 'fresh' after a bit of distance.

I actually think the songs bookending the record are the weakest (so of course that's where the singles came from dddd). So basically:

Not Such An Innocent Girl
A Mind Of Its Own

That Kind Of Girl
Like That
Girlfriend
Midnight Fantasy
I.O.U
No Trix, No Games
I Wish
Watcha Talkin' Bout
Unconditional Love
Every Part Of Me

Everything in between is generally really solid and forms a very good R&B/pop album, and can stand up against any of the other girls' records or pop releases in 2001 generally (OK maybe Girlfriend sounded pretty dated on arrival, and the lyrics are a little cringe/problematic: "if you had been lovin' your man right, he wouldn't have been putting on me all night").

I think the main problem with it is that it didn't have that killer lead single to kick things off in the way the other girls did, which is what she really needed. But other than that there were plenty of better choices for release than what she went with, especially against A Mind Of Its Own - I really don't understand how she thought that would do anything to turn her fortunes around, particularly when she had songs such as Like That, Midnight Fantasy and No Trix, No Games to choose from...

Let Your Head Go is pure excellence and is a single Kylie would have been proud to call her own. Its relative floppage putting the nail in VB’s solo career is the definition of a pop INjustice.

It was more her record label going bankrupt and her marriage becoming tabloid fodder again that were the significant contributors.

I don't think it flopped per se, but it was an uphill battle to get anyone to fully take her seriously even with a great song. The general concensus was that she should just stop. I remember Jonathan Ross outright saying no one really likes her music and asking why she doesn't just quit and go into fashion which clearly hit a nerve nn.

It’s so nauseating to me that this type of degradation of women was done so commonly in the media back then. I think the British press saw her as an easy target and focused more on tearing her down rather than giving her a chance. They set a mean narrative about her and ran with it for years, which was evident in interviews like that Jonathan Ross interview.

Her solo album was second best only to Northern Star and “Like That” should’ve been the first single . Also, her vocals were never that bad, especially in studio. I was grossed out by Mel C (who I love) making some lame “she can’t sing” joke on Drag Race. It’s that bitchy bully behavior that probably makes Victoria dread a reunion tour that would make them all much more money if she were involved.

The best thing to come from the “Let Your Head Go” era was “Me and You This Time.”

I'm quite fond of the whole VB2 era. I think there was some fantastic potential before she pulled the plug. Some of my favorites are "Bittersweet" and "I Should've Known Better" and "That Dude" could've been HUGE.

Hey, guys. It's been almost 20 years since I've been wanting to know the name of this song that plays in the first few seconds here (since it leaked). Would anyone know?
