Victoria Beckham

I think it lacked the impact as a lead single because... had anyone ever thought of Victoria as timid and innocent? As mentioned, it would have been more fitting for Emma.

Based on the music scene in 2001, I would probably have done a singles release of:

01. Girlfriend/A Mind of Its Own (AA-Side)
02. Midnight Fantasy
*album release*
03. I.O.U
04. No Trix, No Games

'I Wish' would have been my sole pick for the lead, with a huge male feature to boot.

Followed by:
2/ - Girlfriend.
3/ - A Mind of Its Own + Midnight Fantasy (AA).

As much as I love her album, it's lacking an impactful lead single. One that was written specifically for Victoria and her image at the time (and not a cover like NSAIG).

01. The huge lead single that never was
02. I Wish
03. Midnight Fantasy
04. A Mind Of It's Own

Out Of Your Mind should have been a bonus track on the album.

I think the album would've stood out more and done better if she'd continued with the garage sound of Out Of Your Mind. People were saturated with R&B-lite Spice albums at that time (Forever, Hot, lots of A Girl Like Me)

I wonder if she did record any solo music like that and then changed things up after Out Of Your Mind "only" reached number 2?

The garage sound was a very brief trend and the public seemed to go sour on it quite quickly. I think she went with Not Such An Innocent Girl as a return as a pop artist (rather than reading as a continuation of the Forever sound) and to tap into some of the Britney hype at the time. Unfortunately, as is the story of most of the solo spice disappointments, things had moved on yet again by that time her album was released.

I still can't get over "Not Such an Innocent Girl" - a track WILLA FORD rejected for her debut album - being chosen as the lead single for Victoria's debut solo single. Somebody set Posh up to fail, you can't convince me otherwise!!!!

Willa Ford was right to reject it. I Wanna Be Bad >>> Not Such An Innocent Girl.

In a parallel universe where they swapped debut singles Victoria would've killed this:

The whole Victoria Beckham debut campaign needs fully exploring, especially with those surrounding her the decisions that were made. Considering some of the choices, Vicky B ate up everything she was given and gave 110% to being a popstar, it’s just the world was not ready for her.

In regards to her debut, the album definitely needed 2-3 more single worthy singles added, as some of the material, although good, needed something extra to stand out and really push as as the Britney/J-Lo of British pop.

‘Out of Your Mind’ was a strong start and a sound she could have continued to weave into the next single as she blended garage and R&B. Perhaps this is where another Darkchild single could have helped the campaign.

‘Not Such an Innocent Girl’ was ok, having gotten better to listen to as time goes by, but at the time, it felt a little flat compared to what the American pop girlies where dishing up at the time. The track needed a harder beat, a slight 2-step sound and more staccato like the ‘Dirty Pop’ sound of the time to take it to the next level.

‘A Mind of Its Own’ should never have been a single. The fact it relied on Victoria talking her way through the verses only reinfornced the public opinion that she could not sing, which was not true. ‘I.O.U’ or ‘Unconditional Love’ would have been a better ballad if she had wanted to go down that route.

Without the introduction of any newer material, other potential tracks which could have lent themselves as singles were ‘I Wish’, ‘Midnight Fantasy’ or ‘No Trix, No Games’, each of which continued the sound she was pushing with her debut single.

I think VB herself owns the tracks? A real pity as they’ll now likely never end up on streaming platforms.

Yup Victoria is the reason they aren't on streaming.

She most definitely wants people to forget she ever sang solo. She apparently wanted her debut album deleted from existence.

I think it was the opposite, sadly. Victoria was three years into being half of Posh & Becks super couple having the OK magazine spreads so I think the world was slightly fatigued with adding music and more reality docs on her to the mix at that point.

I feel like Geri she’s very motivated by success and wants to push the unsuccessful projects under the carpet.

This is fair enough but the unsuccessful stuff is still loved by someone.

The Spice Girls enormous success seemed to set the two of them up to feel like anything but a number 1 in their music career was a failure. Quiet a contrast to Mel C.

Still can’t believe she would rather delete her solo career (let’s not pretend that she wouldn’t delete the first era if she held the rights) than to let people discover and/or enjoy it.

I think this is true for Geri, but Vicky feels more like a case of her confidence being diminished by the critical panning that she “couldn’t sing”. You can just tell she took it very hard, and then leaned into it and branded herself a flop (which is not true). I think she probably would’ve continued with music if that wasn’t what people kept saying about her to her face meanwhile Geri still continued on without knowing how to sing because it didn’t impede her success.
