Video Games

Arise is great so far. Story started off strong, though I do find the writing to be drier than Berseria's, and I don't like how the skits look like the regular graphics. Other than that, it feels so good to play. I'm a sucker for good game feel and this game is buttery smooth. It doesn't hurt that it's so pretty. And I like the Iron Mask dude. Gritty without being edgy.

The game starts off quite serious but the charm and personality really starts to shine through as you play more, which totally makes sense considering the story. The way the characters and the relationships between them develop is one of my favourite things about the game.

That makes sense. I like the dynamic between Iron Mask and Shione. Shione is so bigoted at the moment, but I like that they're characterizing her that way. It makes her character complex and it shows the prejudice Renans and Dahnans (probably spelled that wrong) have for each other.

A weird experience I had with Visions of Mana is that I agreed way more with the villain than the heroes, but I won't say why because spoilers. I hate when that happens, but it does show that there is some nuance in the game's story even if the developers didn't do the best job at bringing it to the forefront.

he/him
I feel anything I say about the Tales characters you mentioned, especially one, will be a spoiler in some way. Enjoy yourself because the story is deep and the characters development as a 'family' is everywhere through the skits/mealtime talks/etc.

Will anticipate your opinion of Kisara with bated breathe.

Arise is kind of giving Final Fantasy XVI energy in that it's a grittier version of Tales and and a tone shift but not so gritty that it feels like a different franchise. The way the world is designed is similar too. Mostly linear but with enough openish areas and towns to balance things out. That's my favorite type of world design.

For those of you who have played Arise, is getting gald going to be a problem? Because I refuse to buy that ridiculous DLC with real money. Putting out real money for fake money feels wrong.

Am I staying up until midnight to watch the Horizon Zero Dawn remaster being the key event?

I haven't encountered Kisara yet in the story but I do really like her design. Not surprised it slays though. Historically, the Tales Of series has had some of the most tasteful anime-inspired designs/artwork out there.

You'll basically go through the game having just about enough gald to keep your party upgraded, but not much more than that. You won't be swimming in it but I never even considered buying the gald DLC, you definitely don't need that. I would recommend getting the three sets of costumes though (the traditional Japanese, beach and uniform ones), because they come with an extra title for each character (so a total of three extra titles per character, each with a unique skill) which add some gameplay variety without being overpowered, and they're pretty reasonably priced too.

Kisara is a great character but the one I liked playing as the least unfortunately, I'm not big on characters that revolve around guarding/charging.

I always just play as the main protagonist in Tales because they always feel the best to me (and Velvet was so OP in Berseria that it would be a crime NOT to use her). I like straightforward melee combat though.

I do really like the combo attacks where you can bring in someone else's abilities. It's a nice touch. Although I definitely prefer Berseria's story so far (though Arise is also very interesting so far), there is absolutely no question that Arises' combat is the best in the series. It's not close.

I like playing as all them as they usually have such different gameplay styles, almost like different characters in a fighting game, not to mention the games generally reward you for it. In Arise, Alphen, Shionne, Rinwell and Law are all really fun to play as, Dohalim too though he's the hardest character to use right (his arena challenges gave me much more trouble than anyone else's), Kisara is alright too but the one I liked the least. Against post-game bosses and whatnot you'll probably find yourself using Rinwell, as she can be a bit of a beast.

Tales of Graces f is one of the best RPGs of its generation, along with Xillia. One of the most fun battle systems I've ever played - some elements carried over to its sequels but it felt just right in terms of how advanced it was.

All the ones that came after Graces and Xillia introduced one (or two) more battle elements that just made my brain melt.
