Gonna download Metaphor: ReFantazio after work. Excited for this one. Finishing Eyuiden Chronicle is just going to have to wait a bit.

I heard that Metaphor is a bit hard but it does have the rewind feature in battle. Love that.

Is this a safe space to admit that The Last Revelation is my least favourite out of the first five games? I’ve always found it to be way too long and lacking in variety of environments since the entire game takes place in Egypt, and the globetrotting aspect of Tomb Raider is one of my favourite things about the series. On top of that, the level design and puzzles were so needlessly cryptic at many points. It feels like all the complaints people have about TR3 apply to TR4 tenfold, yet it’s a fan favourite. I will revisit it with an open mind with the remaster, maybe it will change my mind. I am looking forward to seeing the Alexandria section remastered, easily the highlight of the game.

Chronicles I feel has always been a bit overhated. Yes it was rushed and a bit uninspired, a product of Core being made to make a yet another yearly Tomb Raider game purely because Eidos were greedy… As buggy as they are, I love the Y2K Matrix vibe of the VCI levels and they’re my favourite section of the game, hopefully bug fixes will improve upon them.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Angel of Darkness is handled. I think the original still holds up quite well from a pure aesthetic and atmosphere standpoint, it’s everything else that needs fixing. Adding back the dual pistols is a MUST. And I hope cut content is restored as well, as we saw in the first trilogy remaster it is possible.

I don’t have as much attachment for these games as I do the first three, but I’m still very happy we now have the entire Core Tomb Raider library available on modern platforms.

EDIT: I… just remembered the cutscene for Ireland’s section in Chronicles where an underage Lara is shown to be undressing… the racial stereotypes in TR2 and TR3 were one thing, I can’t imagine how that would be kept in tact for this release

The Last Revelation is very ambitious - it’s full of huge hubs, which are the norm in modern gaming, but just weren’t done back then. The technology just didn’t allow those areas to be seamless and I think that’s the issue with it really.

Those huge hubs require loading screens and the presence of loading, in 1999, gives the impression that ‘everything I need to do to progress is in this area, I would never have to go back to the last level surely?’ So it made every puzzle, or even just working out the correct path to take feel more convoluted than intended.

I’m fascinated to see what it’s like with loading hopefully gone. I think removing those obvious divides between areas should make it feel like a modern hub and encourage a bit more of a modern gameplay mindset.

I'm obsessed with the idea of replaying Chronicles. I have to finish the first triology still, I find the games extremely hard still despite the remastering.

The full achievement list for the 4-6 remaster has leaked and…
...it includes two secret achievements that involve buying things at the herbalist and pawn shop, as well Lara having dual pistols, which means that at least some of the AOD cut content is going to be restored.
I hope they add the alternate path during the opening level. It’s one of the easiest fixes and stops the backstreets feeling quite as lifeless.

The Rome and Russia levels of Chronicles are amazing, but the Ireland stuff is a slog and the Von Croy building feels too hard to be able to enjoy and veers too much into a stealth game which was never the MO for this series.
Last Revelation remains a classic, basing the whole game in Egypt was a solid choice and you really felt like you were going on a real journey with Lara. The story was strong and the settings were glorious.

Oh my god!

Amazing news! I love how they just dropped the trailer without any prior hints - what a mic drop! Now that the remasters have confirmed that I am actually good at these games I can't wait to play Revelation again.

Janice in HD.
I'm gonna go and make a place look crowded in celebration.

Metal Gear Solid really had an influence on the girlies back then huh? Especially Tomb Raider with it adding the crawling and stealth elements in the later games. I'm greatly put off stealth elements in any game and you're right, the Von Croy section is so hard it's just not an enjoyable experience.

The Times exclusive level is also included as part of The Last Revelation.

AOD is going to need so much work done to it to make it a playable game.
The definitive edition mod did most of the heavy lifting. All they need to do is keep the movement snappy and update the combat , reinstate some cut content (which it looks like they’re aiming to do) and make her a bit more magnetic to certain platforming sequences and we’ve got a winner.

I am AOD’s staunchest defender and I can’t wait for her to be reassessed and given the fair shake she’s always deserved.
