Is this a safe space to admit that The Last Revelation is my least favourite out of the first five games? I’ve always found it to be way too long and lacking in variety of environments since the entire game takes place in Egypt, and the globetrotting aspect of Tomb Raider is one of my favourite things about the series. On top of that, the level design and puzzles were so needlessly cryptic at many points. It feels like all the complaints people have about TR3 apply to TR4 tenfold, yet it’s a fan favourite. I will revisit it with an open mind with the remaster, maybe it will change my mind. I am looking forward to seeing the Alexandria section remastered, easily the highlight of the game.
Chronicles I feel has always been a bit overhated. Yes it was rushed and a bit uninspired, a product of Core being made to make a yet another yearly Tomb Raider game purely because Eidos were greedy… As buggy as they are, I love the Y2K Matrix vibe of the VCI levels and they’re my favourite section of the game, hopefully bug fixes will improve upon them.
It’s going to be interesting to see how Angel of Darkness is handled. I think the original still holds up quite well from a pure aesthetic and atmosphere standpoint, it’s everything else that needs fixing. Adding back the dual pistols is a MUST. And I hope cut content is restored as well, as we saw in the first trilogy remaster it is possible.
I don’t have as much attachment for these games as I do the first three, but I’m still very happy we now have the entire Core Tomb Raider library available on modern platforms.
EDIT: I… just remembered the cutscene for Ireland’s section in Chronicles where an underage Lara is shown to be undressing… the racial stereotypes in TR2 and TR3 were one thing, I can’t imagine how that would be kept in tact for this release
