Video Games

70 hours into The Veilguard... it feels so good to have Bioware at their best. Like, this game feels almost vital after US election results. I'm continuously reminded of Waymond's line from Everything Everywhere All At Once - "Please, be kind - especially when we don't know what's going on" - and this game is full of it. The earnestmess of it all. Damn the cynics!

Finally finished Tomb Raider 3...oh my fucking god.

By far the hardest game I have ever played. Jesus. Died a million times, had to consult the walkthroughs on almost every level...but I made it!

The Last Revelation is more confusing from a logistical standpoint. It’s a fucking nightmare to work out where you’re supposed to go next in Cairo, for example, due to the ability to enter and exit levels but it’s much easier in terms of actual gameplay.

Core were out to punish you in TR3.
I never found it any more confusing than other games. But then, I get confused so easily in games that I'd never have noticed anyway.

I hope the remaster has the technology to make those levels seamless and do away with the loading screens, I think not knowing where I could come and go from severely killed my interest in going through that game.

I feel like TR3 is only hard that first time, after you know it it’s a breeze (I’m doing a run on stream currently and ended up setting new personal bests on Madubu Gorge, Aldwych and Lud’s Gate for example)

But also, congratulations to everyone who’s ever finished TR3, because I do honestly feel like Tinnos is the hardest level of all the classic ones.

@HEARTCORE did you do Lost Artefact??? Give it a whirl!!!! I love those levels so much.

I’ve said it before but I think the scope of what they tried to achieve with The Last Revelation is huge. Those hub areas were way ahead of their time. It’s just not very intuitive. There’s a bunch of new mechanics they don’t bother teaching you in the tutorial and it’s hard to have a fucking clue where to go next when you can step into 4/5 levels at any given point.

It’s the best story of the PS1 classics by a mile though.

Agree. 4 and 6 stand together as my personal favorite of Lara’s story and character writing.

It’s amazing what they did manage to accomplish with The Last revelation, even if it ultimately was held back by the tech of the time. I’ll never get over the part where you have to climb the great pyramid

I’m actually taking a break from the remaster because TR3 was so difficult ff. Given how difficult the TR1 bonus level was, I’m not in the mood for more hair-pulling moments right now with the Lost Artefact. Even though it was infuriatingly hard sometimes, I still rank TR3 higher than TR2. That one had wayyy too much action and not enough puzzles.

I’m playing Legend right now cause it’s a lot easier and it was one of the first Tomb Raider games I ever played. The LAU trilogy is by far my favorite!

I wish Legend and Underworld were longer!!!!

And yeah, I echo the sentiment about TR2.... I just.. don't understand how that one is more popular over 1 or 3.
The combat was never what I went to TR for and there's just too much of it (and it's largely a bunch of jobber enemies, really sore lack of inspiration when they're all just generic dudes in an organization or whatever.).

Also, the Maria Doria ruins the pacing of the entire game. Absolutely no need for all those underwater levels to exist.

From what I remember of the Lost Artifact, it was a much easier game than TR3 and the opening section in Scotland is stunning.

My favorite moment in Lost Artefact is
my absolute disgust and curiosity as to why there was a whole ass supercomputer next to a toilet inside of the portapotty that ends up giving you access to the greatest secret in the series!!!!!

A lot of it is nostalgia. It’s exactly the time Lara/TR became a phenomenon and it was the only time where the sequel felt like a leap forward from the game that preceded it.

It had more globetrotting, more puzzles, graphical updates, vehicles, new outfits all in just 12 months from the last game’s release. I think it’s still the second or third best selling PS1 game ever in the UK? So yeah, there’s a lot of TR gateway nostalgia.
