Waiting For That Rate- The George Michael/Wham! Singles Discography Rate- The Winner Is....

I only got into music and Wham the year they split, so I'd go to carboot sales to track down their old singles. I didn't even know there had been a Fantastic Megamix 'til I saw it in Record Collector magazine in the 90s, and sent off for it.
Going To A Town - heard for the first time at this rate. I might not hear it again, but I'd be ok with that.

A cover of the Police standard from 1978 about a man who falls in love with a prostitute, George had the promo for his version made in Amsterdam using real life prostitutes to give the most authentic feel to the cover.

A track that started off brightly enough but soon slide down the rate- will no-one think of the prostitutes?

@Sprockrooster (9) “It has nothing on the original, but still strong track”

@berserkboi (8.5) “I am actually liking this a lot more than the original - which was never a favourite! This take suits the melody so well?”

@gezza76 (8) “It was all ready to give this a 5 and then I watched the video and it all clicked. I knew what the song was about before but I actually think it works better with this kind of backing than the original, more like a reasoned plea to give up the lifestyle- I surprised myself”

@Hairycub1969 (8) “I love this cover…it’s not The Police – but then no-one will sound like Sting/Andy and Stewart playing together!”

@Blaahh (6) “album is meh”

@Epic Chocolat (6) “Too jazzy, nice vocals though.”

@mrdonut (5.5) “Unlike I Remember You or You’ve Changed on the album, this always suffers from feeling like a novelty song”

@Rooneyboy (5.5) “Jazz just ain't my thing”

@br0dy (5) “I never really cared for this song to begin with.”

@Ray (4.5) “I am not a member of the Where Dem Bopz At brigade, as evidenced by my scores for Older, but this is just so utterly unnecessary. Same as the whole Contractual Obligation OMG I Am So Bored album.”

@nanafan (2) “A boring cover. This whole album is one I never play”

I’m kind of OK with most of SFTLC and the Symphonica covers if played in isolation (as stand alone tracks I mean, not isolation as in lockdown!). But put several together and it does become a bit of a snooze-fest.

Roxanne is one of my favourites from SFTLC (although I can’t pretend I listen to it very often) and I’d be interested to see how it would rate against the rest of the album.

A relatively recent cover of the Passengers 1995 #6 track and a pretty straightforward cover at that.

@Sprockrooster (9) “I adore the U2/Pavarotti-version so much I can't help but feel this lacks a bit the powerful drama that Pavarotti brings”

@Hairycub1969 (9) “Another lovely cover. George Michael manages to cover The Police and U2 on one album!”

@berserkboi (8) “Very pretty!”

@Epic Chocolat (7) “The song feels a little empty without Pavarotti's part but good song choice, competent performance as usual. But not exciting.”

@mrdonut (6) “While I’m definitely not a U2 fan, the original certainly delivers more power and emotion than this rather pedestrian cover”

@rawkey (6) “The highlight of the album, probably due to it being acoustic rather than 'jazzy'. When it finishes it is also the time to turn Songs From Last Century off.”

@gezza76 (5) “This doesn’t work as well as “Roxanne” probably because it isn’t substantively different from the original except that it doesn’t have Pavarotti who (let’s be honest) transports the original to another level. He doesn’t massacre it but that isn’t a compliment”.

@Rooneyboy (5) “Does nothing for me”

@nanafan (3) “Another boring cover from a boring album. An indulgent period in his career”

@Ray (3) “You can heal the pain that you're feeling insi– oh, sorry. Welp. This is a weird one, because it's a genius song that George shouldn't have touched. I PREFER BONO VOCALS shocker. It's a really deep, really sad song George turns into muzak. This would, sadly, happen more often later…”

Two tracks I’m not fond of going there. I’m not a fan of Songs From The Last Century, there is no highlight on it
