Waiting For That Rate- The George Michael/Wham! Singles Discography Rate- The Winner Is....

I must say I continue to be impressed how well this rate is doing comments wise on the forum. Considering there are current rates on Lady Gaga, Madonna, Dua Lipa, Mariah, Christina, Kylie, and Ariana on the go at the same time which are all more Popjustice friendly. Glad to see George matters so much as a male vocalist!

Thank you all

Those eliminations are going splendidly so far. George's version of 'Roxanne' would feel less offensive if it weren't for this:

(you can skip to 0:52 for the actual song without intro)

@Hairycub1969 do you like Nouvelle Vague?

Sorry....no....and I've never been a fan of Nicole Kidman either.
Sorry it doesn't rock my boat I'm afraid!

This rate coincidentally occurred at the same time that I decided to reorganise my GM music library in iTunes, during which i gave a proper home to all of the orphan songs and downloaded some of the more obscure tracks that I either didn’t know about until know or just thought they were a bit ‘meh’ at the time.

I’ve played his whole discography to death over this period so it was perfect timing for me. In fact, I think I may be getting addicted to rates as I’ve decided to take part in the Madonna one now (her and George were my king and queen of pop in the 80s so seems rather fitting that both are on the go at the same time)!

Released shortly after the death of George’s mother, the song was co-written by Tony Bourke who was the first artist that George tried to make into a star via his Aegean label. The lyrics reflect the tribute he is paying to his mother through the eyes of his father and himself, and was previewed via the Sun newspaper who allowed the public to call a number to hear the single before it was released. Proceeds of the track went to charity my memory tells me though I can’t find which one on the internet!

It got remixed in 99 (barely noticeably) to launch Bourke in Europe and also in 2002 (for no good reason that I can establish).

@Rooneyboy (6) “It's ok. Just ok”

@gezza76 (5) “This is rather wistful and ethereal but it hasn’t got that much of a tune really- passable”

@rawkey (5) “Toby Bourke does not have a particularly great voice.”

@nanafan (4.5) “Not a fan of this, doesn’t really go anywhere. Amazed it got to the Top 10”

@Ray (4) “Why did George have to force himself onto this song at all? As a result Toby Bourke doesn't even have his own Wikipedia entry and this is listed as a GM single. Was it some misguided attempt to launch Ægean with a hit?”

@mrdonut (2.5) “Wonderful if you’re suffering from insomnia I guess”

@Baby Clyde (1) “Good grief. What's the story behind this. Were they fucking?”

I can’t remember what score I gave to WAD but I’m quite fond of it and sad to see it fall so soon.

On a general note, I’m surprised by the number of zero ratings given so far and am wondering if I’ve grasped the scoring system correctly.

I thought a zero would be extremely rare - maybe for a song that solely consisted of George continuously farting for 3 minutes!

Aww I like Waltz Away Dreaming. I like the video too. I even like the song as a title before I heard it. I bought the single at the time, but had kinda forgotten it existed, with it not being on a George album. I see on Wikipedia that it got to UK No10 ? I wasn't even sure it had gone top 40.
I'd like to have seen it on Ladies & Gentlemen over the likes of Desafinado. Wiki says that it was on the cassette version? Oh.

Oh wow, I only discovered the ‘99 version a few weeks ago. Had no idea there was an ‘02 version as well.

Is there much of a difference? I will definitely have to investigate this further!

I worked out the percentage of zero's in this rate at 0.66% which I'd argue is definitely low, we're at the foot of the rate so they're all showing up now- we've only got 4 left for the whole of the remaining rate though!

George: “This is song was written by a one of my peers at Sony music in the 80s, and this man’s career they absolutely ruined entirely, he’s one of the most talented man on the planet. This song, I thought, was particularly remarkable for its lyrical content which is basically a man talking to the first guy who ever shagged his daughter basically- I think he’s a very enlightened father”

A cover of the Terence Trent D’Arby track from 1993 proved the first release from “Symphonica” and became George’s final chart entry in his lifetime.

@nanafan (7.5) “Another discovery of the rate. I didn’t know this was released. A strong cover”

@berserkboi (7.5) “I like but don’t love!”

@Sprockrooster (7) “His best cover of the 10's. But still not even in his top 5 best covers in his discography. So that is worthless”

@mrdonut (7) “Would have preferred a cover of Wishing Well”

@Hairycub1969 (7) “Good song from Terence Trent D’Arby made better by George”

@gezza76 (6) “I bought the original single back in 1993 so this had a lot to live up to, George does an admirable version but it lacks the rawness of Terence’s original version so ultimately it under delivers for my money”

@Rooneyboy (6) “It's Ok”

@Eric Generic (4) “Pretty girl, but I don't like the way George sings the song. TTD-only.”

@Ray (2) “Symphonica was possibly the most disappointing album I have ever bought. A live George Michael album!!! With orchestra and all!!! When this came out I told myself that the label simply picked a wrong single. It turned out to be representative for the album. I think at this point I just had to admit to myself that my hopes of George returning with good music were just delusions.”

I have a suspicion that @WhatKindOfKylie? gave out about 50% of those! Did you just give out 0's and 10's @WhatKindOfKylie? (this is tongue in cheek btw).
