We're Gonna Cause A Controversy: The Xenomania Rate (THE WINNER)

Discussion in 'Charts, rates etc' started by CorgiCorgiCorgi, Jul 10, 2017.

  1. xenomania (n.) A strong preference for foreign customs, manners, or institutions; the gaining of pleasure from meeting strangers or visiting foreign countries. An obsession with strangers.

Xenomania is the production house behind all your favorite songs. If you've been on these forums for any amount of time, you're definitely familiar with their trademark style - quirky (often nonsensical) lyrics and countless hooks all Frankensteined together into four minutes of brilliance. They've produced everything from raucous party anthems to blues-rock stompers to synthy electroballads. Their resume is a real Who's Who of modern pop music:

Under the name Xenomania, (Brian Higgins) and his creative partner Miranda Cooper are the architects of the sound that has defined pop this last decade. Their sparkling, sonically innovative signature has appeared on 40 top 10 singles ("We have an 85% strike rate," Higgins says, cheerfully immodest) by, among others, Girls Aloud, Sugababes and Alesha Dixon.

Following "Sound of the Underground" and "Round Round", though, Xeno have sprinkled their magic dust over Kylie, Annie and the Pet Shop Boys, becoming a byword for wickedly clever, saucy, superficial, heartbroken pop. If you take all their writing and production credits together, they've had more UK top 10 hits than Madonna, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears put together.
    - NME
They've got a sterling reputation on this forum. Multiple songs they've written/produced have won several rates on here. And now it's time to decide, once and for all, what their #1 best song is. It's gonna be a real bloodbath, so get ready to defend your favorites!

    THE RULES
    • Rate each song with a score between 0 (being the worst) and 10 (being the best). Half points and quarter points are totally allowed!
    • Commentary is encouraged, but not required. The more commentary you provide, the less work I have to do!
    • Optional: You can score your absolute favorite track in this rate an 11/10. You only get one 11, so choose wisely...
    • PM your scores to me when you're done!

    WAIT, WHY DIDN'T YOU INCLUDE...?

Xenomania has a lot of songs. A lot of songs. According to their Wikipedia page, they've produced almost 300 songs!

I wasn't about to force you guys to rate 300 songs, so I picked their 69 most successful/popular songs. (edit: actually 70, I can't count) Most of the songs I've included here have either sold well, gotten great reviews, or they've done well in other Popjustice rates. I also tossed in a few lesser-known songs just for the hell of it. Some are hidden gems, some are ... just hidden.

So, it's very likely that your all-time favorite Xenomania banger didn't make the list. Which sucks! So if you've got a favorite song that isn't in the rate, mention it when you send in your votes, and I can do a mini write-up for it so it still gets its moment in the sun. (You can send in your own commentary for the song if you'd like, but it's not mandatory!)

    DEADLINE

Votes are due five weeks from today: Sunday, August 13, 2017, at 11:59 BST. If it looks like you'll need an extension, just let me know!

  2. So excited for this! Can you do a PM friendly list for us voters? I'm sure it won't take me too long to finish this.

  3. Wait why did you remove "The Loving Kind"?!?!

  4. Ñnn at me posting that before seeing this. No but seriously please consider adding it back that was literally going to be my 11.

  5. .... I actually thought it was in there! Adding it back now.

Sure thing! I'll get that updated ASAP.

  6. Thanks! I'm excited for this. Half of this list are some old favourites and the other half will be a discovery for me. So should be interesting.

  7. This is going to be the toughest rate ever for choosing an 11. Some of my favorite songs of all time are on that list.

This looks interesting, I know maybe 2/3 of the tracks so might give the rate a try if I find the time! As for initial thoughts...

I had no clue these two had any Xenomania involvement! Looking at the credits they're listed as Mr. Joshua co-productions which apparently is one of Higgins' side projects.

This Xenomania production is my favourite Saint Etienne track overall but it's an album track so I can't be too mad about its omission (it's a great album though).

This one, however, was a single so I remain a tad salty:

  9. My 11 is rock solid despite having so many candidates here.

One of the best rates ever for real.

I'm so happy Girl Overboard is in and I think stans for both big groups will be pleased now with the lists.

Expect tons and tons of commentary from me. Rating this is going to be sooo enjoyable.

  10. This is the rate of the year.

  11. Dddd I can't believe I ever had this in the queue, I've never heard like 90% of these songs.

  12. I could probably score 90% by heart, and within an hour, if I wanted to. I won't, though. I'm really gonna have to be careful with handing out 10s left and right.

  13. It will be so hard to pick an 11.

  14. SO MANY 10s! And I'll definitely have a stroke deciding which one is my 11...

  15. I'm working on my commentary now, and it's making me want to have a Girls Aloud DVD marathon and listen to them all day. I didn't think this rate would bring back so many memories!

slaybellz, Mvnl and DJHazey like this.
  16. I think everybody will want to use the "do I want/would I be happy if this song won the rate" method in order to control the number of 10s they hand out.

Utopia, slaybellz and Reboot like this.
  17. I'm definitely doing this, so good that the deadline is quite far away.

  20. Definitely going to do this! "If You Go" is in it how can I not?
