Wicked

I really like Ariana but the idea that because its a musical and because she has a big fanbase this is going to work out is weird. 19 year old girls jamming to Positions aren't necessarily going to be hyped to go watch her sing show tunes in a big pink ball gown. And history is littered with big name singers playing singers in movies that..... don't do well.

I stand by Cynthia and Ariana being odd choices for a movie with a lot of money riding on it. And splitting it into 2 movies is an even more expensive gamble.

I never saw the musical so I can't comment on that, but I did read the book a few years back, and if they lean into the fantasy epic aspect of it I can understand why they'd split it into two parts. Actually, the book series could probably make for a cool Lord of the Rings/H*rry P*tter-esque saga if they choose to go in that direction.

Thinking about them leaving Part 2 open-ended so they can try to launch a universe off of this

Thinking about how if this shoots this summer but doesn't come out until December 2024, it's going to be a ridiculous CGI fest

The way you’re all acting like Cats wasn’t a modern masterpiece.

I’ve not seen a greater cinematic spectacle than Dame Judi Dench with the human hands they forgot to CGI, lifting her leg in the car and flashing hole.
My personal favourite was the bit where Jennifer Hudson floats away in a hot air balloon, and you think the film is over...at which point Dame Judi turns to the camera and proceeds to 'sing' a completely nonsensical song about how to address a cat.

Amazing.

I mean, I get what he means because Defying Gravity is such a finale song, but I don’t think splitting into two films is the solution to this problem? A cut to black for a few seconds before a slow ‘Five Years Later’ or whatever it is would be fine I think.

And also musicals have been adapted into movies since Hollywood began and they’ve managed it just fine so … just say you want cash bro.

I think the studio overestimates the popularity of Wicked in 2022. It’s loved and such but I feel like it missed its moment for a two film release years ago. I’m not saying it won’t make money, but the two film release feels more like if a film came out a few years after the musical started. Also, I can’t remember any of the songs after Defying Gravity…

Yeah, this is poor reasoning. And I'm Telling You ... was also designed to bring the curtain down and yet the Dreamgirls managed to be one film. It's just not a good idea at all. Aside from As Long As You're Mine and No Good Deed, there aren't a lot of memorable songs in the second act, so having it be a completely separate entity is such an odd choice.

I'm sure they're going to chuck in some original songs too to get those Oscar nominations.

The whole second half of Wicked hangs around No Good Deed and For Good so they’re absolutely going to need original songs in the second half to make it worthwhile. Though Wicked Witch of the East is also pretty good and could be a cute moment for whoever lands the role.

I REALLY hope they learn their lesson from Cats. This is based on a stage musical. Avoid CGI at all costs. Keep it practical. No one cares if it's a person in a costume, that's the point

I am wondering how they’re going to create the spectacle of her flying in Defying Gravity. It’s amazing in the theatre because it’s happening right there in front of you - a CGI Cynthia Erivo isn’t gonna hit the same.

Not this Cats love in 2022…

The thing is Cats was never going to be anything but a hot mess, Wicked is an amazing musical with a solid plot that makes sense… So I feel like the stakes are actually higher for it and I’m concerned it’s not going to go the way we want but… let’s stay optimistic!

The second act is pretty slight. I fully believe we’re going to get some more gratuitous elements (maybe even some songs) from Wizard of Oz to pad out the running time of part 2.

The book is a lot more evenly paced than the musical, so if they look to that and add in a fair few extra songs...
