Wicked

Holy shit, the digital sales for this are absolutely ASTONISHING.

In the US it did $70M in a week on digital, with $26M of that coming on New Years Eve alone. For context, the previous first week record was Super Mario Brothers, which did $40M. This is HUGE.

In the UK, it sold 140,000 digital copies in 2 days, bringing in another $3.5M.

So yeah, while it definitely cut the legs off it at the box office, Universal won't be regretting their decision now.

Should still be at $700M global box office by Sunday, with Japan still to come into play.

700 $M is a given at this point, let's see what Japan will bring to the table, but a 750-800 M$ is doable especially if they will re-release it before or during the Wicked: For Good release.

I'm very curios to see how the second part will roll out both marketing wise and box office wise. It will do wonders in US and UK for sure, but I'm very curios to see the international markets.

I don't know if you knew it, but Wicked is not available to buy (in digital form) on most international markets.

In Italy it will come out on the 23rd of January on digital retails and it will available to rent only starting from February 20th. Still not a release date for the dvd/blu-ray but I guess it will be around March at this point.

I'm so curious what it will do in Japan. I think it's one of the strongest markets for musicals outside the Anglosphere but I have no idea what gross is considered a success in the Japanese market.

BAFTAs nominations are out, 7 for Wicked but only Leading Actress and Supporting Actress in the main categories (others are: Sound, Production Design, Costume, Special Visual Effects, Make-up & Hair).

I though UK would have gone nuts for this during the awards season.

Jon Chu keeps being snubbed and it's pissing me off.
Yeah I feel for Jon. I think he's done something incredibly special and he's just not getting the recognition.

Probably they will be waiting for Part II to be released to give him his flowers (same with Cynthia which will have more chances next year to win Best Actress than this year opposed to Ariana which if doesn't win this year I hardly believe she could snatch next year).

It seems like this will pass Dune part 2 to become the 5th highest-grossing movie of 2024. However, Mufasa may pass it eventually and push it back down to 6th.

Yeah Mufasa is holding very strongly, so it's pretty much certain that it'll catch up to Wicked. But I don't think there'll be much in it. Especially once it starts losing screens for other new releases.

Wicked has done amazingly well. When all is said and done, it'll have pulled in upwards of $550M just from the US and UK.
