World Politics

I will say the propaganda machine Stateside is in full force. Holocaust specials airing left and right on local TV. That blue square commercial is on all the damn time now. It sucks because Jewish hate is a real thing obviously that deserves to be fought against, but it's not very subtle how this is being conflated with support for the Israeli state, especially when these spots come on during breaks on cable news. It's gross.

HOW exactly can you even help Palestine if you live in the Western world right now?
I was just going to ask the same thing. Like, is there any mechanism by which I can give aid to Gazans? I'm not even in particularly good shape financially but I would drop a hundred in a heartbeat if I knew it was going to them. And this:

It's almost as if the issue is not really protecting Jewish people but rather maintaining a strategic point for Western military control in the Middle East.

This is how I frame it when people have been talking to me about it who are open to a good conversation. We're swimming in trash people in Idaho, but I've been pleasantly surprised a few times by how I seem to have actually de-propagandized some friends. If you can, it's worth doing.

For those wanting to donate I can recommend the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund.

And for those that can, also buy yourself a kufiya from the last remaining factory in Palestine. They ship worldwide.

Thank you!!! I'll be doing both. And PCRF is doing such important work right now, I'm so glad for that. It's obviously not enough to protect all the children but this was reassuring. $4 million means people give a shit.

I really don't like how you're phrasing this as a "conflict". Conflict to me would entail a two-sided scenario where both sides can end it, and this is not the reality of the situation. Israel is the only one with the power to end this "conflict" by ending its occupation of Palestine. Palestine cannot end the conflict, because that would entail giving in to their own ethnic cleansing. When we pray for peace on this abstract level we are relativizing the discrepancy in power dynamics between Israel and Palestine. And it's really not that "hard to understand" - we're witnessing a genocide as part of a 70-years colonial project, and the governments are preventing any kind of resistance or demonstration for their own personal gain. Speaking pro-Palestine gets you shadowbanned on social media apps, widely read media outlets are spreading misinformation, and public space is given to celebrities with biggest platforms and social media reach (who largely don't read news or think critically about these issues). HOW exactly can you even help Palestine if you live in the Western world right now?

If the West actually cared about antisemitism (as if that were really the crux of this issue), they could have limited the political space of right-wing parties in their own countries to start with. There are plenty antisemitic entities and networks both in Europe and in the US, but we are apparently not going to limit "freedom of speech" when it comes to actual fascists. There's a rather bizarre paradox in the fact that many Jewish communities in the imperial core of the West are impoverished and ignored, while the leading nations fund and champion a genocidal project on another continent. It's almost as if the issue is not really protecting Jewish people but rather maintaining a strategic point for Western military control in the Middle East.

I understand exactly what you mean and I agree with your definition of conflict.

But there are still organisations like Hamas or Hisbollah. I can't overlook them. I can understand that you credit their terror to helplessness and despair. But to me, this is as big a crime and I understand that Israel is trying to protect itself against terror. And I see the terror they are committing towards their people. The civilian population is not only a victim of Israel but also of their government. So no, I'm not on their side.

And I feel the question if Israel has a right to exist is long gone. It might have been wrong at the beginning and I probably agree that it was a mistake to let it ever happen. But now it's a fact. You can't displace 9 Million people, it would be the same injustice as it was then.

So to me, these thoughts make this situation very complex for me. Apart from the civil population of Palestine, I can't see anything worth fighting for or anybody who is fighting for the right cause.

But I agree very much with the spirit you're talking. I like your attitude and I will listen and think about what you're saying.

Let me close with the voice of one of the victims of the Hamas' terror. She gives me hope that maybe the young population of Israel could be the answer.

There are “KIDNAPPED” flyers all over my neighborhood—in California—with Israeli citizens’ photos. Psychotic behavior.

I took the ones on my block down.

Yas! We only get posters about the blessings of a full 10% tithe and anti-pornography seminars here. I'll take it.

You know what's getting on my nerves? The framing in most US news outlets, most recently the 20/20 special I'm debating watching right now on Hulu, as "Israel vs. Hamas." It feels deliberate.

Israel is a place with people. Hamas is a specific militant group within Palestine. They're not just at war with Hamas: they're at war with every single person in Palestine??? Like, maybe there's other valid reasons but my mind immediately says that it helps to prime the American mind to this as "Holocaust survivors who share lineage with my own God versus tarrists."

I’m surprised of all the social platforms that Threads is the one where all the ‘support Israel no matter what they do’ people are.

Here's today's latest from AP News, right on top of their homepage. It was nice to at least find an article that focused on the severity of Israel's response on the people of Palestine. They (Israeli govt.) claim 600,000 civilians have successfully left Gaza. I... have doubts.

Hospital infrastructure is about to collapse under stress. Israel says the water is back on and, surprise, it's not!
Successfully left Gaza how exactly? Teleporting? The gaslighting.

They are everywhere. The amount of people I've unfollowed on the socials because they can't stop themselves from sharing their Tel-Avid pride memories... the pink-washing did a number on them.

Meta has basically taught their algorithm to hide any support towards Palestine. Any time I share a story/post on FB/IG my views stay at 3 or 4. If I share those as screenshots suddenly everyone can see them. It's not just that we're witnessing a genocide live, but the fact that we're being forced to watch it in silence.

Also,

This ended me.

Some positive news in Poland at least by the sound of it, that the right wingers have been beaten by a coalition.
I am not getting excited *just* yet until the coalition is confirmed and the final results are in. I feel like the ruling party will try and pull some nasty tricks. All the articles about votes from abroad not being counted are a mess too.
