This is probably a bit overblown, in my opinion.
Basically, in a nutshell:
- After our election last year, the government is going to be another coalition government, with the same two main centre-right parties, plus some independents to make up a majority.
- There is a rule that independents can form a 'technical group' in the Dáil (parliament) and get speaking time in opposition.
- However, some of the government-supporting independents want to both support the government and also be in a technical group with speaking time as the opposition. Which is a joke, because you're either in the government or not.
- Sinn Féin, the biggest opposition party, as well as other opposition parties, decided to cause chaos in the Dáil yesterday and delay the proceedings to nominate a new Taoiseach (prime minister). Which I think they were right to do, because that was the only way the government were actually going to pay attention to the issue.
It seems like the issue is being resolved today and the Ceann Comhairle (basically like the speaker of the house?) has finally come to her senses and said that the government-supporting TDs should not be given opposition speaking time. At least that's the latest news.
If that goes ahead as planned, the Taoiseach will be nominated, and we'll go back to having the same centre-right government before. And nothing will fundamentally change, yay! (That's sarcasm)
