I thought 2009 was really lacking in, shockingly enough, the 'x factor' i.e. the star quality. There were a lot of great singers and some likeable characters but it didn't feel like there was a slew of potential popstars, which is what we had in 2008 when you could clearly identify the type of artist each contestant would be if they got a record contract.
This year, was more like the 2008 series in that respect but, unfortunately, the format is lacking any kind of freshness at this stage and has become so over-produced you start to feel that you're watching it to spite yourself. I also thought it suffered from a lack of 'guest mentors' which we had in spades last year, but were wasted on the contestants. Essentially I think: 2009 production + 2010 contestants = something approaching 2008. Alas, that's not what we got.
