X Factor US

Re: American Idol / X Factor US

He's apparently been talking with Paula! I am imagining Paula trying to introduce someone after one of her 'cups of Coke' and I can't stop laughing.

Re: American Idol / X Factor US

Simon is definitely leaving, and he even took time out of his statement to mention Paula - she is so on US X-Factor.

I wonder if Ryan will make the jump or not, I'd argue he's the last remaining icon of Idol still tagged on that show, and I can't imagine the producers letting him go easily. That said, he's the most famous host in America, and could help create some sort of instant familiarity. On the other hand though, I wonder if having Ryan, Simon, and Paula all back together on a talent show will make X-Factor seemed a little washed-up on arrival. It will definitely be interesting to watch and see how they fill the show out.

(Maybe have Paula host the show?)

Re: American Idol / X Factor US

I feel like Seacrest will stick with Idol. I don't know why I think that he will, I just do.

X-Factor US is such a bad idea I can't help being excited for it. I don't want to make generalizations, but does the US even have celebrities who could make decent mentors and are reasonably beloved (or willing to play the role of the villain, other than Simon himself)? Trainwreck ahead! Can't wait.

Re: American Idol / X Factor US

This will work even better if he gets a well known, RELEVANT female artist in the Cheryl role...Paula is more Danni than anything else.

I want Britney, oh the irony of Britney judging a live singing competition....

-Simon Cowell
- Britney Spears
- Paula Abdul
- David Foster

Re: American Idol / X Factor US

After I mentioned it, I really started to like the idea of Paula hosting the show. That way the show can avoid her loopy judging comments, and place her in a position where she shower the contestants with praise and encouragement.

Re: American Idol / X Factor US

But I love Paula's loopy judging comments! Plus I don't think Paula can be trusted to read a teleprompter.

I love being right (see page 2). The only conceivable reason Paula would have knocked by Nigel Lythgoe's on-air begging for her to join SYTYCD is because she's been promised an X Factor job.

With American Idol continuing on the same network - everything will be done to maintain stability on that show after Cowell's departure - and that includes offering Ryan a squillion dollar to stay put. It's a shame because I think he's the only other thing from Idol I would have transfered.

So hosts becomes a big question mark. Dermot O'Dreary can fuck right off. He has never accurately represented the X Factor brand and I think that with Cowell being such a big part of the show – it ‘sounding’ too British might be a concern. And Dermot just isn’t very good.

I’m convinced Katy Perry might be involved in the panel and I have no rational reason for thinking that other than it being a ‘hunch’.

Has this been confirmed? I'd always assumed The X Factor would just replace it.

Re: American Idol / X Factor US

I generally like discussing and following these shows much more than I like watching them (my involvement in 2009's X Factor was reading the thread and Digital Spy "news" "updates") and I'm really excited to see who the X Factor US judges will be.

Dream judge possibilites:

Simon Cowbell
Oprah Winfrey ("YOU GET A RECORDING CONTRACT! YOU GET A RECORDING CONTRACT!")
Tyra Blanks ("*rambling crap*")
Dolly Parton ("PRAISE JESUS!!")
Prince (Can you imagine? "*filing nails* May u live 2 see the dawn, rainbow child")
Detective La Toya (The ultimate judge of vocal talent!)
Ozzy Osbourne ("mmrrmgrgh")
Sinead O'Connor (She could rip up a photo of the person who gets voted out!)
The coffin of Michael Jackson
The coffin of Janet Jackson's career
Mutya
Ali Lohan
Heidi Montag
Mr. Blobby

So did I but it seems not. Simon announced his departure at the Fox execs commitee and said Idol would 'flourish without him', presumably the network intends to run both at separate ends of the year.

It mirrors the UK trend. The talent show fatigue that pundits have been predicting for years has never come. The audience accept talent shows as a distinct and permanent genre now – and no more expects them to have ‘months off’ the schedule than they would chat shows. ITV now almost has back to back singing and dancing talent shows at weekends throughout the year; Dancing On Ice – Popstar To Opera Star – Britain’s Got Talent – The X Factor and BBC1 is much the same.

Thus, Fox will have SYTYCD sandwich with Idol and X Factor either side. I think it could work for them quite well.

I always found it odd that apart from Fame Academy back in the day and the Andrew Lloyd Webber shows, ITV is the only network to have a proper singing competition. (At least that I'm aware of as a foreigner) Especially since the rights to Pop Idol became available again. Surely there's room for a network like Channel 4 to have its own Pop Idol, Popstars, So You Wannabe A Popstar or whatever formats are still available.

Re: American Idol / X Factor US

Hmmm. I guess the other UK channel considered Pop Idol so similar to X Factor that it never could actually compete with it (as no other UK channels budgets come close to ITVs). On Fox, the two formats don't need to compete as they are on the same network.

I think the problem might be in the way that Channel 4 and BBC view themselves, and the concept of "variety"/end-of-the-pier based entertainment (which is essentially what a talent show is). Channel 4 have had similar shows, but hidden under the T4 brand.

Re: American Idol / X Factor US

P.S. Lythoe could maintain his strong links with 19 and take over from Cowell on Idol - if they think the US audience could cope with 2 shows a year 'fronted' by him.

Re: American Idol / X Factor US

I don't think Nigel is enough of a star (although I hate that word) to give him the 'Simon Seat' - in my opinion, the American Idol judging panel is already in ruins this season, and with Simon jumping ship, I don't know how they'll be able to recover.

I was thinking though about casting X-Factor last night, and thought of L.A. Reid as the other male judge - he's someone actively involved in the recording industry now, and I think it's going to be important to cast people who have their finger on the pulse.

Re: American Idol / X Factor US

Their reputation in the industry is kinda secondary to how they can 'perform' on camera. Hence Simon's casting for Idol in the first place. The wider public know - or care - quite little about the job a previously faceless corporate might have done. If they are told 'so and so is a top music executive that has worked with X, Y and Z' they'll accept that and then base their thoughts almost entirely on how they perform on the show.

Re: American Idol / X Factor US

There was an article on MTV.com talking about possible replacements and they are just including people's random suggestions. So far, Kanye West and Hugh Jackman have been suggested, along with (shudder) Bill O'Reilly and Sarah Palin. What? This is why the mindless rabble should not be allowed to chime in.

When they had 'Celebrity Duets' a few years back (the closest thing we've ever really had to a legitimate 'Celebrity Idol,' I don't count 'But Can They Sing' on VH1, sorry), David Foster, Marie Osmond, and Little Richard were judges. I seem to remember Foster being willing to be a bit critical of the contestants. Maybe he could take Simon's seat?

Per RhythmNative's point, I don't really remember anyone being overly fussed with Randy Jackson in the first season of Idol (i.e. it wasn't like he was some 'big-name draw' or super famous in his own right, at least outside of the industry). Now I can't imagine the show without him.

Re: American Idol / X Factor US

I think that's funny, because I think Randy is the most irrelevant judge on Idol by a long shot. His repetitive vocabulary and the fact that he never really says anything noteworthy is by far Idol's weakest point. If they really want to retool Idol, I'd buy out Randy's contract and put him out of his and the audience's misery.

Were you talking more about Nigel being on Idol - or L.A. Reid being on X-Factor? Or just in general?

I do wonder if X-Factor will be able to rope in a contemporary pop star like Cheryl, reality television isn't exactly seen as the place to go for a career boost in the States. However, I do think Britney would be brilliant, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a fan.
