X-Men ‘97

I swear if that episode means
no more Gambit I'll riot. I am hoping it's a fake out.

The way Disney is being SO bold with this series gives me major hopes for the live action X-Men.

One of my favourite parts of the series so far is
the bittersweet way the first episode really showcases how strong Storm is and the skill she has over her powers before having them taken from her.

X-Force announced with Forge, Rachel, Betsy, Sage, Surge, and Tank. Plus a “revolving door of guest stars.” Deadpool is the first.

Potentially getting rid of Betsy’s code name, ‘Captain Britain’ and changing her outfit into a basic red and yellow ensemble worries me hugely for the character.

It feels like we are going two steps backwards and she is going to be pushed back into the background.

Having her adopt the ‘Captain Britain’ mantle felt so earned and rightful for her once she had returned from the Psylocke drama.

Fingers crossed they don’t turn her into a boring background character as the uniqueness of her character and her previous costume was incredible! Still gutted we never received a Marvel Legends figure to boot!

Question to those who are more familiar, but the moment between Magneto and Rogue in episode two, is that referencing something unseen in their past of something that happened in the original series? It's been ages since I saw the original.

It's just a cosmetic change to fit in with the rest of the team. Let's see where the series goes first. Either way I imagine her relationship with Rachel will ensure she is at the forefront, combined with the fact she is such a strong fighter.

Yay for Forge, Sage, Betsy, and Rachel!

...boo for New X-Men I could never be bothered to learn and those incredibly ugly outfits.
Put some respect on Noriko ‘Surge’ Ashida’s name, she’s been around since the Morrison era!

The Academy X/New X Men generation are my faves since I was a teen reading x men at the time they were the New Class. Love to see them get represented in the new era.

I hope so and appreciate the reassurance. As you could probably imagine, when you have a character you love so much, it’s hard seeing them being shoehorned into a new comic. Fingers crossed!

Would you rather she didn't appear at all in any comic? She's getting a prime spot on a team, what's to complain about?

Captain Britain has been a total flop era for Betsy so I would be happy to see her move on and carve out her own identity.

RE: Magneto and Rogue. Their romance in this riffs on a short lived flirtation they had in the Savage Land in the comics. If I remember correctly, Rogue was powerless then as opposed to Magento being an exception to her powers.

Ah so it's one of those "happened in the comics but also in the animatedverse" situations? Like how Iceman and Polaris were once X-men but we never see them as members in the show? I love that. It shows attention to the world building of the series that so much has happened that we've not seen.

It's interesting to see Rogue not able to absorb Magneto. I think something similar happened in the comics but with Colossus. Even though she was able to absorb his powers before no issue dd.

No, I’m not saying that.

I’m glad she is still being used but I am just saying I prefer her in her ‘Captain Britain’ phase. The whole connection felt like a natural transition.

It’s great she is still being used, but I hope they don’t lose who she was during her run, that’s all. Natural progression, I get, but as long as they don’t wipe her previous storyline completely and the new writer tries to make her what they want.

Either way, we will just have to wait and see when the book is released on how they transition this phase.

If anything it was a regression for her. She'd already done the Captain Britain thing before. She had a chance to become someone totally different after the return of Kwannon but it just felt like going back multiple steps.

Betsy could be sorely missing an identity without the Captain Britain moniker. Kwannon IS Psylocke so Betsy needs to continue carving her own lane.

Anyway…

Not over todays episode! The set-ups… the pay-offs! I have to believe Cable and some time travel fuckery will be relevant buuuuut they could also commit to the bold moves they’ve made?

Did you read the comics? She was only ever Captain Britain before in service of her brother’s storyline. It was after that, and being a background character her entire existence, that Claremont moved her to the X-books and began her gradual shift into the badass Psylocke we’d come to know.

Tini Howard’s run (I didn’t love every issue) gave her the chance to have adventures, in an entirely newly designed and described Otherworld, while building new relationships and enemies. It was really positive for the character.

Can't believe I missed the tiny cameo of Archangel in that episode. There's so much to see that you need to have more than one watch of it.
The Genosha council giving Quiet Council vibes was epic too.

I know Cable suggests it can all be fixed but I’m still wondering if she might see substantial changes to the status quo by the end of the season.

I can’t help but feel Jean’s dialogue was a set up for her to ascend to a cosmic being and for Madelyne to replace her. I could be wrong.

Reintroducing Phoenix? I never even thought of that but after what happened in this episode, why not? It seems each character is being pushed to their limit.

The dialogue felt very on the nose if it’s not the case. Especially since today’s episode is taking heavy inspiration from New X-Men, which covered Jean’s reunion with Phoenix.

Did Maddie even survive that last episode? It was so chaotic and didn't hold back on showing the killing of people. It'll be interesting to see
who did make it out besides Rogue and Nightcrawler.

From what I saw
Magneto, Callisto, Leech, Gambit, Marrow, Banshee and perhaps Sebastian, Dazzler and Emma all didn't make it.

My thoughts are that either
the team goes into the past to fix the present and save those who perished, or Maddie will become the Phoenix and sacrifice herself to bring back some of the dead. I just can't imagine them not doing something to at least bring Magneto and Gambit back since we have a whole new season of this confirmed and maybe a third.
