Yellowjackets (Showtime)

Yeah, I haven't watched this week's episode yet, but I've been struggling a lot with the season so far. Great acting moments aside, it's just been dull and, at times, quite terribly written. The wellness retreat stuff is boring as hell, and virtually everything else going on in present day feels like equally boring and/or silly. They're wasting such incredible actresses on some terrible material.

The stuff in the cabin had been better, but it still doesn't feel quite season 1 level. It all feels a bit aimless, whereas season 1 felt like it was clearly on a mission and building to something.

Hopefully they manage to get it back on track.

This might sound dramatic but I feel confident saying at this point that this should have been a miniseries. What made the premise of the show compelling depends on the kind of tease that isn't really worth it spread out over multiple years, and it's become clear the show isn't equipped to go deeper into the psychology of the characters in ways that make sense / are interesting.

It'll be interesting to see what its Emmy haul is like this year. People were calling Lynskey a kind of default frontrunner for a while but she hasn't exactly shone. Nelisse is the only one who's stood out but they're bafflingly pushing her in Lead. And the press around the show is getting increasingly negative...

I wasn’t as critical as some of this season because I still thought it was all going to lead to some big things in the last 3-4 episode but yeah with 1 episode left that hasn’t happened. I’ve still enjoyed it overall but it isn’t on the same level as season 1. That being said I still have hope for it to get back on track and for future seasons to capture that magic again.

he/him
Yeah they swung and missed this season, which is a bummer. They couldn't figure out the tone in the present day. There wasn't as much camp in the first season, so the John Cameron Mitchell scene, the Elijah Wood plotline, the cops chasing Shauna's family, Taissa being an elected official who just... left and turned her phone off? Too many holes and non-sensical storylines.

I was also surprised the group so swiftly agreed to the hunting?! I hope they do one more season, adjust the comedy to drama ratio, and close it out as well as they can.

At least we got a great Alanis cover out of it.

They started writing season three just as the strike started. I presume a few things will get resolved and some new things will be thrown into the mix for the end of the season to set up the next one.

I think being Showtime's flagship drama series probably benefits it and will give it a bit of breathing room even if critical response and viewing figures this season are off from the first one. Had it been fully shifted onto Paramount+ it might not be so secure.

I have enjoyed this season but it was jarring to see it that quickly from them being in that circle picking cards to them going feral after Natalie.

I like the idea of it not being anything supernatural but them losing their minds a bitsy and the reveal of Nugget was genuinely shocking. I feel like this season may benefit from a binge watch rather than weekly.

Or them sitting around talking and Lottie suddenly going "oh you know what we should do? One of us should commit suicide right now!" out of the blue. Like girl, give us some setup.

This whole cult thing has been such a fail.

Also, one more nitpick. All the buildup around Javi only for him to come back and die like this? What an anti-climax.

Especially when that blonde in the snapback we know nothing about is right there!

Hmm. The ideas are all there, and it’s obvious what they’re going for, but the execution is choppy. Like, it felt like they wanted to hit certain milestones this season but some of what we saw needed a lot more buildup, and some felt like it should have wrapped up several episodes sooner. I wouldn’t say I’m as ready for this show to bite the dust like some of you are, though. It’s a 10/10 that’s fallen to a 7 at worst. This season still had some great moments, like the end of episode 2, which was a great, disturbing and earned twist, even if it was a little predictable at that point. All the hunt needed was a bit more context of the groups mindset (we got a taster with several of the hallucinations in this latest episode) and maybe some more exposition on the card game which was only touched on with chores throughout the opening episodes. With a tidier third season I think things could be back on track fairly quickly.

I am more than ready for the murder coverup story to end so Shauna can get a decent story next season, though. And I’m guessing it will next week so we can move on to something bigger and better in season 3.

not Javi eating chicken wings beneath that tree the whole time… I’m so curious about what the hell is going on there and I hope the answer isn’t simple.

The episode overall was fine. I’m glad we’re finally making some headway but it felt a little fast/messy.

The Queen Of Hearts has her eyes scratched out on the playing card, well it was Natalie telling Shauna to look her in the eye when killing her that basically saved her life.

Also instead of outright killing each other to feed, why not just chop arms/legs off cauterize the wounds and eat those?

They probably could, but I'm hard pushed to think of an example where a messy second season led into a tidier third.

I think the present day storylines just haven’t been as compelling as what happened in the woods. The Shauna murder plot in particular has been dragged on so long, for what?

The show is still watchable, but it has so much potential to be better. There’s been some fantastic moments this season, but overall it’s not living up to the first season. Hopefully the finale doesn’t disappoint…

What a mess.

Killing off one of the most interesting characters. Then that plane scene? Lottie telling Natalie to let it in? What?

Jeff and Walter's scenes were genuinely hilarious. God, it really says something when it's the male cast members in a female-led show being the highlight.

I enjoyed the finale. I’m looking forward to the 96 (97?) timeline being out of winter and that damn cabin. With the present timeline finally moving on from Adam’s Murder and having to deal with the consequences of what they just did mainly effecting Lottie, Van and obviously Natalie.

I wonder if Juliette Lewis wanted off the show. I think I remember her saying last year that she wasn't satisfied with the writing. I saw people saying it was comeuppance for being picked first to die in the wilderness but it's still odd to kill off one of the biggest stars in the show and with no real closure to her arc.

Yeah everything feels very rushed. Them deciding to have the card game needed more build as did Lotti's whole pick the drink game. It hasn't been horrible by any means but it's kinda crazy with how well done season one was. Maybe with all the complaints they will course correct a bit with season 3.

Also not to beat a dead horse but the CGI breathe haunts me.
