Yellowjackets (Showtime)

I know it's beside the point but this show has become so... naff to look at ddd. For something on Showtime it's not giving prestige TV anymore. It doesn't need to be ~aesthetic if it's compelling narratively but well...

Yeah this week's episode made my faith dip again. I though they were off to a decent start but killing off Lottie so early into this season, no adult Natalie, more Elijah Wood detective hijnx... why? I want more of the impact of the wilderness on their modern lives. What the trauma does to their relationships.

Also they haven't yet figured out that Misty destroyed the help box from the crash, right? Maybe that's why they're so standoffish to her in the modern timeline but even then, it's weird.

It really feels like they’ve trapped themselves into a corner a little bit with the format. The catalyst for the elder timeline was what? Travis’ death which they’ve kind of forgotten about? Tai’s senate run which they definitely want us to forget about. Shauna’s fender bender with Adam which turned out to be nothing? They visited the high school reunion way too early especially if they were still going to introduce more survivors later on.

The story of them coming back into the world and the aftermath could be so interesting but probably will just have a flashback episode at best to deal with it.

I just don’t think the current timeline has much of a coherent plot or throughline. It should be LOST esque where we see how the past impacts on who they are now, along with a proper mystery or villain, but it’s just not hanging together.

One big issue, most likely budget related, is that there’s just not enough characters in the wilderness? They needed a handful more characters like Mari, who isn’t a lead, but someone people will care about when she gets eaten. Or have in reserve for a future surprise survivor.

Problem two is that we’re beginning to really lose the stakes. The confirmed survivors from the wilderness are outnumbering those at risk of death. We also know that three teenage series leads/regulars - Nat, Travis and Lottie all survive… but are now all dead anyway. It’s kinda hard to keep investing in their wilderness scenes when we know how it ends for them.

They've named all the teammates now (the last two were named this season, and the episode 4 title confirms there are no other girls left unnamed). We need to know a whole lot more about these newer girls like you said, since the only deaths outside of the survivors that would make any kind of dent would be Akilah and Mari, but they do have scope now for someone else to survive. Melissa seems obvious at this point but that could be a red herring so who knows.

I feel they were backed into a corner in season one and just couldn't name everyone since they've filmed in the middle of the pandemic, but it took too long afterwards to sort out that discrepancy. It was especially annoying in the second season when almost all of the wilderness scenes were in one place, with very few places for other teammates to hide. Anyone who was more that a very casual viewer was noticing these things and it was quite jarring when outlier personalities like Crystal popped up out of nowhere. At least its set in stone now when it comes to casting the teens.

I need some of the mysteries in the adult timeline to have better payoffs. Tai realizing the man with no eyes is from a commercial (?!) and nothing really occurring at the diner that couldn't have occurred down the street is so weird.

Also does Crystal's body disappearing matter? ddd

As mentioned, there's no central mystery or antagonist in the current timeline to act as a plot engine so it feels we're just drifting aimlessly and the relationships are not even that compelling anymore. Yeah Misty acts weird. We get it. That's why Natalie was a loss, she created some tension and unpredictability.

I'm starting to think this is a great show to watch once it ends, like all five seasons or something. Going through it episode by episode is getting tiring with NOTHING happening. I'm waiting for a big midseason plot twist, a big reveal, a time jump, something.

This isn't necessarily a criticism, but three seasons in and I struggle to see a lot of similarities between adult and young Shauna. For all the other leads I can feel a strong connection to their younger selves despite what they went through in the woods, but with Shauna it's not quite the same. Maybe it's just because Melanie Lynskey is so camp kii.

Yeah, there's a IDGAF-ness to Adult Shauna whereas Young Shauna definitely DGAF - but maybe that's just getting older.

The "big mid-season plot twist" pattern is why I gave up on The Walking Dead. There would be weeks and weeks of absolutely nothing then it was "oh shit, the mid-season finale, better throw in a cliffhanger or kill someone off". Lazy, lazy writing.

The best shows give you enough good material to hold your attention even in episodes where the plot doesn't move forward significantly. That is not what's happening here.

Yeah I think the schism forming between teen Natalie and Shauna is really fascinating (and might be leading to the Yellowjackets splitting up). I would have liked to see more of their dynamic as adults. Even if the plan was always to kill off Nat, they did it too early.

She was also the only adult worth rooting for ddd everyone else is too deranged in their own way but it feels like they’re trying to make the viewer empathize with Misty more this season.

It’s definitely gonna be: Shauna, Tai, Van, Melissa (+ Jen or whoever that is dd) on one side, and Nat, Lottie, Travis, Misty, and Akila on the other. I saw a theory that Ben isn’t their “bridge” to rescue but to moral salvation? Mari is a wildcard to me. Is there anyone else?

Oh we are so back!

The way Van’s face dropped when she mentioned birders was such a great moment and hint at what was about to happen.

They definitely screw up this chance of getting rescued… or I suppose they already have ddd. Nobody thought bathing Ben and not treating him like a prisoner would have been the easiest way to keep him alive?

And who is the shadow Lottie sees leaving the campsite hm
