You really should be watching Hulu's 'PEN15'

  1. What a funny and charming show. And the (very adult) lead actresses play middle schoolers so well I keep having to remind myself they're actually in their 30s.

The late 90s / early 2000s period detail is spot on, too.

As funny as the show is, I'm also surprised at how moving it can be. I just finished episode three in which Maya discovers... as Steve Martin said in The Jerk... her "special purpose." It managed to be quite meaningful and empowering without being preachy.

Love this show so much. It's funny but goes deep and sometimes is way too real, I was 12 in the year 2000 so I could relate a lot with the main characters and that whole era. And that dance scene with Des'ree's You Gotta Be is a spiritual sequel to Romy and Michelle dancing to Time After Time.

  3. I loved this show! Really hilarious and it’s pretty cool having a show set in a past decade that I can actually remember living through. Looking forward to a season 2 because I binge watched the first in the space of 3 days and really want more.

I watched it all in one day - it was so funny. Even when they're not trying to be funny, it's still hilariously uncomfortable reminding yourself that these women are in their 30s playing these awfully awkward teens and really nailing it.

The scene with the throbbing vagina really sent me - was not expecting that.

  5. I still find myself randomly laughing thinking of the moment when they show the hat-designer their headshots and she mutters under her breath "jesus."

  6. I was 12 in 2000. We are ULTRA millennials. I must watch.

  7. I started this a few days ago and it really is Broad City set back 20 years. I'm on the Posh episode now

  8. I binged this over the last few days and it was so fun, just really heartfelt and absolutely hilarious. Both actresses are incredible comedians. They play the awkwardness of being that age so well, sometimes I'd genuinely forget that I was watching adults play children.

S02 is coming in a few months.

  10. Could NOT be more excited...and honestly just as excited to rewatch the first season. No one understands the pain I encountered as a Y2K tween like these ladies.

  11. HAIM + PEN15 is an absolute perfect pairing. Super excited for season 2, I was worried about it not airing because the pandemic suspended some of their production but I’m glad we’re getting 7 episodes at least.

  12. I was going to say, I can't think of a more perfect musical pairing for this trailer.

  13. Can’t wait for this. I was also 12 in 2000, so this is all freakishly on point.

Just a reminder that the first half of S02 is out!

  16. I’ve already watched the first five episodes and it’s hitting me harder than season one. It’s surprisingly emotional, and this more thoughtful tone works really well with Anna’s storyline and the alienation Maya was feeling at the end of season one.

Episode 3 is the one so far, especially the ending.

Chanting Vendy Rochelle Wiccany and casting a spell to see the third episode snatching all the drama and comedy awards tonight at the Emmys.

  18. I loved it. One or two episodes in I wasn't sure if they'd recaptured the magic of the first season, but I needn't have worried. What a joy. So, was the season abbreviated because of Covid or was it always the plan to do just seven episodes?

As a turn of the millennium [barely] closeted theatre nerd, Gabe's story was... quite relatable.

  19. Finished the season and it’s just as good as the first, but surprisingly more dramatic and emotional. I found myself really feeling for the characters this season in the best way. Talk about growth.

They actually shot 14 episodes for S02 and were in the middle of editing when the pandemic started so this was only the first half of the season. We're getting S02-B next year.
