Your Favourite Sophomore Albums (that eclipsed their debut)?

Several of my all-time favourite albums are second efforts, that - for me - and also commercially were (even) bigger than the debuts:

Tears for Fears - Songs from the Big Chair
Deacon Blue - When the World Knows Your Name
The Blue Nile - Hats (obviously)
Suzanne Vega - Solitude Standing
Scritti Politti - Cupid & Psyche 85
Culture Club - Colour by Numbers
Alexander O'Neal - Hearsay
Style Council - Our Favourite Shop

I love Funeral to bits, it was my introduction to Arcade Fire, but Neon Bible was on another level and commercially took them to another level too.

Shakespears Sister - Hormonally Yours
Jessie Ware - Tough Love
Sade - Promise
Gorillaz - Demon Days
Friendly Fires - Pala
Florence & The Machine - Ceremonials
Foals - Total Life Forever
All Saints - Saints & Sinners
Harry Styles - Fine Line
Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia
Lady Gaga - Born This Way
Years & Years - Palo Santo

That's brave! (But I agree).

Speaking of Our Favourite Shop, the TSC documentary's on this weekend!
Brilliant! Love TSC, should be a great watch. Actually now I think of it, isn't Other Voices better than both.... I find Secret a more quality listen than No Parlez, though the debut singles are better.

I made multi-disc SDEs of Parlez and Secret recently, so the material's fresh in my mind. I still maintain Secret is better (even with the extra nostlagia factor I have with it). But yes, Parlez has some killer hits. Other Voices was a quality return from the wilderness, I'd say it's just short of the first two (and I wish they'd issued A Little Bit Of Love as a single).

Great second albums for me:

The Smiths - Meat Is Murder
Prefab Sprout - Steve McQueen
Power Of Dreams - 2 Hell With Common Sense
Into Paradise - Churchtown
A House - I Want Too Much
Felt - The Splendour Of Fear
The Divine Comedy - Liberation
Suede - Dog Man Star
Heaven 17 - The Luxury Gap
Ramones - Leave Home
Ride - Going Blank Again
Pale Saints - In Ribbons
Boo Radleys - Everything's Alright Forever
Slowdive - Souvlaki
Lush - Split
