Your unpopular pop opinions

Michael Jackson was a monster and his music is cheesy and repetitive with a few brilliant songs here and there. There are also much better male singers out there (George Michael destroys him vocally). Even if he didn't abuse those children (I think he did), why the fuck is he having sleepovers with other people's kids?

He also has the most unhinged fanbase in music. They think he was a prophet or something.

I can sense somewhere deep in my bones……..

…… the thesis of the BPG rate

…… Beyoncé has transitioned from THE POP STAR of her generation to THE ARTIST of her generation…..

….Adele really said fuck this pop star thing, I’m a mom and I will take every chance I have to sit down for a minute …..

….Taylor Swift cements her status as Pop Star of her generation and pushes Adele off her sales throne with her million copy opening in 2022!!!!!!!!!!

And also all the other up and comers and such, special shout out to Lizzo!!

This.

I also think he was guilty. The "but he didn't have a childhood" excuse is total BS. If Joe Bloggs "didn't have a childhood", for whatever reason, but was having sleepovers with other people's children as an adult, no-one would defend that. But because it was Michael, it's apparently OK. But making these points to his fans is like arguing with a religious fanatic.

On the topic of the Jacksons, didn't Janet work with the same producers for like... 20 years? Her sound was very stale, as a result, by the late 90s. The 'sexy' image got tired even more quickly.

Yes, Janet worked with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis from 1986 (Control) to 2006 (20 Y.O.), but they were such versatile producers that I don't see an issue with continuing that creative partnership. The four tracks below are all varied, despite coming from the same album:

Her late 90s album is The Velvet Rope which is pretty universally acclaimed as a masterpiece so I'm going to have to nope on that. Also, I don't see how a woman being sexual can be "tired", is she supposed to turn it off? Her sexuality was weaponized against her and destroyed her 20 year career and her legacy just because she was female and black. Let's be a bit more mindful of how we tackle these subjects.

The 1993 album was 'sexy Janet'.

Then the 1997 one was too.

And the 2001 one.

And the 2004 one.

You see my point?

Yes you're entitled to your point, especially here in this specific thread, but embracing a bit of a better perspective that's more open to...well...intersectionality may do you some good. Sexuality and race exist at a very precarious intersection, and your relative fatigue with her music may say more about your approach than her craft. Just a thought.

I can see why people might have gotten tired of the sexy content by 2004/2006 but janet., The Velvet Rope and All For You are completely different albums sonically. And lyrically she touched on many different topics on them, so they're really not just "sexy janet" records.

Who here didn't laugh at Janet's ridiculous sex songs and interludes after Velvet Rope. She became a bit of a parody of herself. More comedy than cutting edge by the time of Discipline. I think some people have a rose tinted memory... yes, she is an icon but that doesn't mean she hasn't recorded some terrible songs too.

She let me (and the gays behind us) down big time paying Together Again dust at Glastonbury, seemingly focusing on her earlier big-in-the-US-but-not-so-much-Europe material in a rather breathless megamix.

That's the Way Love Goes still sounds fresh in 2022 on the right speakers though.

While Tinashe has put out some killer songs and is a mega talent, I kind of understand her lack of success. I don't really find her that distinctive compared to other big pop girls, even ones that she's considerably more than talented than.

I guess you can point out a handful of "sexy" songs on each Janet album from janet. onwards (and maybe the ratio got uneven in latter cases) but there are so many other elements in the mix of janet., Velvet Rope and All for You that I would never consider them "sexy" albums. Damita Jo is probably the biggest offender of being pretty one-note, but even an album as shallow as 20 YO doesn't really stick to baby making music.
