Your unpopular pop opinions

I didn't want to be too negative in her Pop & Justice thread but I think Lourde's music is bad and her aesthetics are cringey. She's trying way too hard to be edgy but the music is anything but. It lacks definition and character and is generally boring.

Also, the Ed Sheeran hate on this forum is a bit over the top. Yes, his music is mediocre as hell (I barely made it through his latest album) and the lyrics are beyond cringe but I'm almost positive that half of this forum would be trying their best to stan some of his songs if a pop girl was on them. I mean, how many completely banal songs do PJers get behind in the name of "fun" if one of their faves made it?

Sis you've basically said some variation on this like four times.

Ed's career has almost entirely missed me, so my knowledge of him is limited. His credits on other artists' work though has always struck me as pretty catchy and melodic.

Bops!

I'm not that familiar with his body of work either, but the same song craft in those songs is present in his own work, yet people act like it's the worst stuff ever. It's not. It's unoriginal and banal but there's a certain amount of songwriting competence that people would absolutely be willing to acknowledge if a pop girl released the songs. Yes, his lyrics suck and yes, he struggles to fill an album with worthwhile songs, but this is true of Katy Perry too and she seemed to have a lot of weird good will before she reminded everyone that she's a fucking idiot.

Wait are y'all talking about Lorde or Lourdes?

Most people are repetitive as hell with stanning in these threads, yet repetitive opinion posting only seems to be pointed out when people don't like the opinion being stated.

But yeah, my opinions can be a repetitive loop a lot of time, but I'm autistic and I'm really not trying to mask on the internet.

To be frank with you that's a big part of why I kinda hate this thread nn. Lately it's basically a neverending loop of "(x) is overrated/bad actually" -> "no they aren't" -> rinse, repeat. But I'm still in here so I guess I'm a masochist!

You're not wrong, but I think that's true of the Pop & Justice or General Discussion threads too, only it's usually the same praise rather than the overrated/bad thing. Like, if you go into the Madonna or Gaga or Kylie threads, the same opinions come up every other page. I actually prefer this thread because at least you get some wild ass takes sometimes.

- Alexandra Burke's Heartbreak on Hold is a fantastic album, it's a shame that it flopped because it's definitely her best work. Oh La La will always be the single that got away.

- I don't know if I want another Britney album in this era of songs getting shorter and shorter. Even if she was to create something as fantastic as Blackout, I don't know if I'd want a variation of it with two minute songs. As much as I love her and would absolutely welcome an album that isn't filled with songs marketed for TikTok, if she finished her singing career with a stellar effort Iike Glory that would truly be going out with a bang, one of her best albums.

I mean, of course people would be here for some of his songs had they been released by someone else, I think the same goes for many other derided artists on PJ. I don't think anyone's saying these artists are only capable of releasing unsalvageably terrible music (even if some/a lot of it is), the artist's presence on the songs is a major part of what makes them so unappealing.

And enjoying a song if it was made by someone else is perfectly fine. But some posters on this forum act like they hate Ed Sheeran's music because it's banal, mediocre, and unoriginal (which is true), all the while stanning banal, medicore, and unoriginal work from pop girls. I get that the pop girls are more appealing than Ed Sheeran for a number of reasons, but sometimes it just seems like PJ is more concerned about who is singing a song than the merits of the song itself.

Probably more of a unpopular rock opinion, but I think Collins era Genesis destroyed Peter Gabriel era Genesis. I just think they were a better band when they injected more pop. Duke is their best album by far and songs like Land of Confusion, Mama, Throwing It All Away, etc. are just straight up better songs than any of the Gabriel stuff.

Also, Phil Collins is a much better singer than Peter Gabriel. I do think Gabriel was the stronger artist in his solo career, but no fucking way did he have the better voice.

In a career riddled with mistakes and missed opportunities, the biggest mistake in Ciara's career was following Ciara with Jackie, which was a regression and felt like a rushed release, despite coming almost two years after Ciara. You could hear the mismash of older previously unreleased material and old demos that other artists passed on on Jackie, while Ciara, despite being equally as eclectic, was a stronger body of work.
